Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: Metal Heart (Metal & Magic Book 1) by Michelle Frost

Blurb: When stray human Matthew wanders into Black Dog shifter pack territory, he’s injured and vulnerable. The last thing Matthew expects is for the pack’s alpha to be the home he’s always been looking for.

Bram can’t believe his nose when the trespasser his enforcers drop at his feet turns out to be something entirely different. Nursing Matthew back to health becomes Bram’s priority, but the pack isn’t thrilled to have a human in their midst.

When the pack gives them an ultimatum—either Matthew joins the pack in truth or leaves—the only question is, if he decides not to stay, will Bram be able to let him go?

Metal Heart is the first novel in the Metal and Magic series, a dystopian urban fantasy romance filled with magic, adventure, and the perils of being human in a supernatural world.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

~excerpt from Bound by War (Laken's story)

“You’re lucky she didn’t kill you.”

“It wasn’t for lack of trying,” Torin said. “I take it she’s dead?”

“She is,” Hamza answered.

“And?”

Hamza studied Torin. “Are you sure you wish to get into this now?”

“Yes. I—” The was a whoosh from the console near Torin, and he grimaced. “I feel fine, but if that’s pain medication, I probably won’t be awake long.”

Neo moved to the machine and checked something. “It was. It’s amazing you’re even sitting up. You should be flat on your back and unconscious.”

“I was highly motivated not to be.”

“I’ll make this brief,” Hamza said. “As you know, Tah’Nar got involved in the Ne Reynian civil war. My starships attacked, the tide of the battle turned, but the Ne Reynian battleships refused to surrender.”

“Not surprising.”

“They sustained massive loss of life. Once it was safe, ground troops were sent to the surface. They rendezvoused with the resistance and took the palace. Thanks to you, we knew Queen Ogill was in residence.”

Torin bowed his head in acknowledgment.

“Queen Ogill was captured. Princess Dossi was located and freed. Queen Ogill was chained to the floor in the throne room to await judgement. Long story short, Princess Dossi offered me the opportunity to obtain vengeance for the murder of King Duran. I… returned the blade to her.”

Torin raised an eyebrow.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

THE SCENT of food woke Torin. His mouth watered, and his stomach growled .

Opening his eyes, he surveyed the room. Curtains now enclosed the medibed giving him some privacy. Machines beeped, reading his vitals. Nevertheless, none of that indicated how much time had passed. His muscles warmed as blood flow increased, and his stomach rumbled again, more loudly this time.

There was something missing. Someone, actually. Then he heard a low chime of bells.

“Well, I’d say you’re hungry. I can hear that all the way over here. Just a moment, and I’ll be right there.”

So the male hadn’t broken his word. Ridiculous how reassuring that was. Laken’s voice soothed him, even if he couldn’t see him. Funny how the sweet melody from the bells Laken wore in his hair had infiltrated his sleep.

That was what was missing, and it should’ve made him uneasy. Blishue didn’t depend on anyone, much less let their guard down, and that included around his own kind. But he’d slept soundly with a stranger next to him. That was troublesome.

As were the annoying IVs. That he hadn’t ripped out them out was its own minor miracle. Why hadn’t he then? Being drugged left him vulnerable.

How many hits to the head had he taken?

He stretched, his joints popping. His mind was heavy and sluggish, and there was no pain. He eyed the IV. This was ludicrous. He couldn’t think straight. Maybe he should yank it out and—

“Ah, yeah, I wouldn’t do that if I was you.” Laken nudged the curtain open and ducked inside.

The sight of Laken hit Torin like a space shuttle. How had he not noticed the ice-blue gemstones that sparkled in the overhead lights? They winked from his ears, wrists, ankles, and nipples. The male had his nipples pierced.

His.

Nipples.

Pierced.

Stars save him. It was the sexist thing he’d ever seen. Laken still wore the same cobalt blue sarong, and matching sandals graced his feet. He also was holding a tray that had several steaming containers.

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: Unhinged (Necessary Evils Book 1) by Onley James

Blurb:

Adam Mulvaney lives a double life. By day, he’s the spoiled youngest son of an eccentric billionaire. By night, he’s an unrepentant killer, one of seven psychopaths raised to right the wrongs of a justice system that keeps failing.

Noah Holt has spent years dreaming of vengeance for the death of his father, but when faced with his killer, he learns a daunting truth he can’t escape. His father was a monster.

Unable to ignore his own surfacing memories, Noah embarks on a quest to find the truth about his childhood with the help of an unlikely ally: the very person who murdered his father. Since their confrontation, Adam is obsessed with Noah, and he wants to help him uncover the answers he seeks, however dark they may be.

The two share a mutual attraction, but, deep down, Noah knows Adam’s not like other boys. Adam can’t love. He wasn’t born that way. But he refuses to let Noah go, and Noah’s not sure he wants him to.

Can Adam prove to Noah that passion, power, and protection are just as good as love?

Unhinged is a fast-paced, roller coaster ride of a romance with an HEA and no cliffhangers. It features a dirty-talking, possessive psychopath and a sweet cinnamon roll of a boy with Daddy issues and a core of steel. There’s gratuitous violence, very dark humor, enough steam to fog up a hundred car windows, and something a lot like love. This is book one in the Necessary Evils series. Each book follows a different couple.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

~from my WIP Bound by War

“Then quit being an idiot,” Dayo suggested. “And on that happy note, come on. We need to return to our stations. Move that sexy ass before we both get written up.”

Laken glanced over his shoulder to see Dayo pushing Raiden in front of him, Raiden grumbling the entire way. Since Raiden was leaving, Laken allowed the spines to retract. Now that the threat had passed, Torin also let go of Laken’s arm, and he missed the heat from Torin’s touch immediately.

But right before Raiden and Dayo walked out a Medical, Dayo turned and shot Laken a look. Dayo might’ve defuse the situation, but it was by no means over. Laken knew this. Dayo wanted to speak to him? He’d have to get in line behind Kia, Malk, all his friends, and even the King of Tah’Nar.

“At some point I have to remember to ask Gibor or Doc if Keyno was that hotheaded when they were younger,” Hamza mused as he watched the pair walk out of Medical.

“If I had to guess? I’d say yes. Anyway.” Neo slowly approached the medibed, keeping an eye on Laken. “I’d like to update you on your condition, Torin. Do you wish for Hamza and Laken to leave? You have the right to privacy.”

“That’s not necessary. Go ahead.”

“Okay,” Neo said. “Your permission has been recorded. So, you had emergency surgery, which means you need to take it easy. That wound in your abdomen was significant.”

Laken whined softly.

“Fortunately, no organs were involved, but I’m worried about infection, so precautions were taken. I also repaired all the minor wounds, but I can’t do much about the bruising. I don’t foresee any complications, especially since I flooded your system with antibodies, but you need to be monitored for now.”

Neo’s diagnosis was short on details, and that worried Laken. Neo seemed to be glossing over the situation, which probably meant it was much, much worse than what they were being told.

Plus, Neo was only addressing the physical damage. Nothing had been said about Torin’s mental welfare. What had the female done that they couldn’t see?

“Thank you.”

“You’re dehydrated, malnourished, at risk for infection, and suffering from blood loss. We tried to clean you up as best we could before I operated, and we redressed you in surgical pants. The assorted IVs will help with the majority of what I listed. For the next several unit days you’re going to be sore, weak, and have pain,” Neo said. “You’re lucky she didn’t kill you.”

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

~from Bound by War (Laken and Torin's book)

"I’m Laken. I guess you know everyone behind me.”

“I do. Some better than others. I’m sure they’d say that was most unfortunate.”

Raiden muttered under his breath again, and the slap of a palm against an arm echoed through the room. Raiden’s sigh was so put-upon and dramatic Laken’s lips almost twitched.

“So, are you planning to leave these out indefinitely?” Torin asked gently, raising Laken’s hand where the spines still were extended.

“Well, that depends on how much of an idiot Raiden plans on being.”

There was more muttering, another slap, and a yowled that was so pathetic Laken snorted.

“Fine! I won’t kill him while he’s injured,” Raiden snarled.

Torin glanced around Laken. “You assume you could kill me even if I wasn’t injured.”

Laken cringed. And they were doing so well. Kind of.

“Oh, you—”

“You’re not going to kill him at all, Raiden,” Dayo snapped.

“Not making any promises that I can’t—ow! Dammit, Dayo, stop that.”

“Then quit being an idiot,” Dayo suggested. “And on that happy note, come on. We need to return to our stations. Move that sexy ass before we both get written up.”

Hello 2022

It IS a new year, and thanks to all the health problems last year, it IS a new me lol. But yeah, my dream is still the same>>>to write. And now it's time to get a fresh start on that dream!

So here’s a quick update on what I have planned on the writing front this year! Of course Bound by War is the first on the list. I delayed it when I found out I had cancer (along with two other health problems). This is Laken’s book and will be the last book in the Young series. Feels odd saying that. Dale and the gang, plus their young, have been around since 2010. Wow.

What’s after that? I really have no idea. I promised myself I’d finish up allllll my series before moving on to something new. I *hope* to do that, but gah! I have some fab premades lol. The thing is, I don’t wanna say I plan to work on so-and-so, only to find the muse isn’t interested. I’ve learned not to force it. That never turns out well.

And after not writing anything much these past months, (thanks to one major surgery, one fairly major surgery, and then radiation) if something does gets hot, that’s what I’m going with. I’ll tinker around with the older stuff first and see if anything happens, then we’ll go from there lol!

Oh! I do plan to update the covers for the mermen books. That’ll be coming soon, and I’m excited about it.
