~Teaser from Marked by Moonlight #2 in the Gargoyles of San DeLain
Kayden ate as he joined in on the banter and the sharing of plans for the night. Outside, the storm rolled closer. Raindrops pattered softly against the windows, a quiet counterpoint to the noise and warmth within.
Kayden leaned back, letting the voices wash over him, contentment settling in his bones. Ward’s hand rested on his knee. He could stay like this forever.
Thunder boomed and lightning briefly lit the room. Ward nudged Kayden, pointing out the window to the storm in full display. Kayden nodded, eyes wide.
“Are you about done with breakfast?”
“Yes, actually. Why?” Kayden asked as he wiped his lips with a napkin.
“Want to watch the storm from the observatory?” Ward asked.
That did sound totally cool. “Absolutely,” Kayden said. “Are you done?”
“Yes. Let’s clean up and go.”
Another loud thunderclap rattled the windows. Kayden watched as Ward moved with his usual graceful authority, gathering plates and silverware already half-stacked.
The clatter and clang of dishes created an odd kind of music underneath the noise of the storm. Kayden followed Ward’s lead, scooping up his own cup and dishes and following Ward to where they turned them into the kitchen staff.
They waved to their friends and headed up the stairs. Thunder continued to rumble, the vibrations thrumming through the stone beneath their feet.
Kayden glanced at Ward, noting how the flickering light cast moving shadows across his mate’s face, making him look mysterious, almost otherworldly.
Ward caught him looking and gave him a grin. “What?”
“Nothing. Just thinking how lucky I am.”
Ward squeezed Kayden’s hand. “Pretty sure I’m the lucky one.”
