Tuesday Teaser (a day late lol) for Bound by War

“OH MY gods.”

The sudden exclamation jerked Torin awake, but he kept his eye closed and maintained his steady heart rate while trying to figure out where he was and how much danger he was in.

“He’s quite the specimen, isn’t he? I was going to comm you later. How’s Kia doing?”

Torin flipped through his mental database trying to place the name, but he was still too foggy.

“He’s fine. I think seeing Ogill killed helped him move on.”

He still couldn’t place the name Kia, but he’d worry about that later. Hearing Ogill was dead thrilled him. Good. That meant Dossi more than likely had assumed Ogill’s position, that was if Dossi was still alive.

She had been taken captive by the queen, who was also her mother. Dossi had been tortured for standing against the crown. The females in power were nearly as twisted as the Blishue. It was the ultimate compliment as far as a Blishue was concerned. He no longer agreed.

“Oh gods, Neo. This is the Blishue who helped the resistance, isn’t it? Is he okay?”

Torin struggled to keep his breathing steady. Neo. Well now, he certainly knew that name, and it helped explained where he was. Neo was king consort and mate to Hamza, the ruler of Tah’Nar. The Tah’Narians knew he was a double agent, but for one of them to be concerned about his welfare was shocking. Even more so was the effort put in to save him.

“He’s okay, and yes, he’s the spy. Unfortunately, we don’t know his name yet.”

So they hadn’t figured out his identity. Interesting. Eyes still shut, he listened closely. The king consort moved to the foot of the bed and picked up something that rattle. Ah, yes, that was right. Neo was a doctor too, so that rattle was most likely his chart.

“He was unconscious when found, so because of his injuries, it was best to keep him sedated during treatment.”

Frost's Bite (The Mystic Bay Series Book 3) has been released!

Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0912Q73ML

He’s what things that go bump in the night fear.

Tragedy brings the ice elemental, Nicholas Frost, to America and lands him on the doorstep of the High Council. While surrounded by a group of Guardians who question his offer to kill the vampire Jackson, Nicholas stumbles across the man fate has decreed his. Although overjoyed, the secret he hides is now in jeopardy of being revealed.

Something lethal lurks within.

Cold. Powerful. Feared. A killer. Like the softly falling snow, Nicholas is silent and deadly. Always alone. Always guarded. His abilities are unrivaled, and other paranormals avoid him. With good reason.

And the man fate has paired him with is a truthsayer—a living lie detector.

Guardian Jonas Parker is convinced fate has made a monumental mistake. Guardian lifespans are practically eternal. Elementals only live a couple of hundred years. No way that golden thread which links them means what he thinks it does. Surely fate wouldn’t gift him with a man he’ll outlive?

Jonas is a truthsayer, which is difficult enough. Add in the chance of an accidental surface reading if he touches bare skin, and no one is willing to get close to him. Jonas can dig into anyone’s psyche and unearth all their secrets regardless if they’re willing are not.

No secret can remain hidden from him.

While Nicholas and Jonas struggle to figure out how a mating can work between two such different paranormals, Jackson plots. As the final battle looms on the horizon for the men of Mystic Bay, a terrifying prospect has emerged—something not even Nicholas and the others may be able to defeat.

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: Red Heir (Adventures in Aguillon Book 1) by Lisa Henry & Sarah Honey

Blurb:

Imprisoned pickpocket Loth isn't sure why a bunch of idiots just broke into his cell claiming they’re here to rescue the lost prince of Aguillon, and he doesn’t really care. They’re looking for a redheaded prince, and he’s more than happy to play along if it means freedom. Then his cranky cellmate Grub complicates things by claiming to be the prince as well.

Now they’re fleeing across the country and Loth’s stuck sharing a horse and a bedroll with Grub while imitating royalty, eating eel porridge, and dodging swamp monsters and bandits.

Along the way, Loth discovers that there’s more to Grub than meets the eye. Under the dirt and bad attitude, Grub’s not completely awful. He might even be attractive. In fact, Loth has a terrible suspicion that he’s developing feelings, and he’s not sure what to do about that. He’d probably have more luck figuring it out if people would just stop trying to kill them.

Still, at least they’ve got a dragon, right?

Excerpt:

WHEN ALONE in the snow-covered hills, peace prevailed. Outside noise fled, and silence was a constant companion. It wrapped cold arms around all it touched, offering the feeling of being the only person to have ever walked this path.

To Nicholas, it was paradise.

Funny how those feelings reversed in an abandoned building. There was something sinister about a structure obviously erected at great expense, then simply left unused. And in the dark of night? Well, the mind plays tricks, asking what monster skulked through the corridors, waiting to sink its greedy claws into unprotected flesh.

Nicholas was that monster.

Satisfied he heard only one beating heart, he crept forward. After dodging barbed-wire fencing, he pushed his way through thick foliage, moving soundlessly toward the towering, decrepit warehouse. Finding an unlocked side entrance, he slipped into the building.

It had been allowed to fall into disrepair and suffered from vandalism. Trash littered the floor, and every window he passed had been shattered. Broken beams of moonlight fought the darkness as Nicholas walked the maze of twisting corridors toward the open, main floor.

As he drew closer, he expanded his senses. Good. Still only the one beating heart in all the silence, along with the stench of cigarettes now. Such a nasty habit. But it did have its uses—like disguising scent. He lifted his hand, and a rather strong blast of arctic air flooded the immediate area.

“Fucking hell! Dammit, Frost.”

Nicholas chuckled. Yes, he imagined his informant didn’t appreciate the chilliness, since he was ectothermic. That’s what he got for smoking. While Nicholas did request this meet, and knew the paranormal waiting for him, he wouldn’t relax his guard. A lax assassin was a dead assassin.

He sniffed the air currents again. Nothing human had been there in a long time. The only living paranormal inside was the one who Nicholas expected. Nothing undead lay in wait, either. To him, vampires smelled slightly musty with a hint of moss. And, as odd as it sounded, decaying mushrooms.

Satisfied no one else lurked, he strolled onto the main floor.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War, The Next Generation Book 4

BEEP.

WHOOSH.

Beeeeep.

Whoosh

The sounds of fighting had faded. Hopefully Princess Dossi and her supporters had won the civil war and overthrown Queen Ogill. If so, then what he’d done hadn’t been in vain. His heart slowed. Maybe now he could find peace.

“Hey, I’m sorry. You’re right. All of us are under stress, and yes, we’re as uncomfortable around you as you’re around us. But ever since I found out about the spy, I’ve been worried about him, and I don’t give a damn if he is a Blishue.”

Torin didn’t recognize the speaker.

“I apologize for my outburst. But you need to be prepared. It’s bad.”

He did recognize Impur, though.

“By the gods! I’m having him transported to the Unity immediately!”

All that changes when the spirit of a gunslinger appears in his bookstore with a message that will flip Sage’s world upside down. According to the mesmerizing apparition, a powerful magic lies within Sage... if he can find a way to tap into it.

Tuesday Teaser

*TRIGGER WARNING. VIOLENCE. FLASH BACK OF TORTURE*

This is an excerpt from Bound by War.

The pain pulsing from the new incisions in his body was nothing. His species was known to be sadistic. Cruel. Without mercy. Terrors of the universe. Bloodthirsty monsters who kill without regard or regret. He was not an Ne Reynian who was fragile and weak. Breakable.

He smirked at the female.

What was one more scar on his body or his soul? He was broken inside. She might slice pieces of him away, but it was nothing more than another line on his skin, just another reminder of what he was and what he had done in his life.

A Blishue had no regrets, but he did. About many things. Perhaps this deed would pursue Fate to wipe the slate clean. He yearned for atonement from his sins, his brutality, his past merciless behavior.

Or maybe it was just time for him to die. He was tired of it all. Blessed darkness would be a relief. Another bite of the blade and coldness cut into his abdomen. There was a sharp, searing pain followed by a deep ache. Trails of liquid dripped down his sides, tickling slightly.

Tuesday Teaser

*TRIGGER WARNING. VIOLENCE. FLASH BACK OF TORTURE*

This is an excerpt from Bound by War.

BEEP.

WHOOSH.

Beeeeeep.

Whoosh.

A scrape first. Cold metal stroked against his bruised skin and the kiss of a blade woke him immediately. The dull pains of a battered body greeted him as he returned to consciousness, and he fought not to groan.

The first line of fire stung but wasn’t too bad. The burn of the rope tightening around his wrists as he flexed his arms annoyed him more. A mean smile flashed above him. Black eyes gleam in the darkness.

“You will scream for me, Blishue.”

Another slice of the blade. Harder this time. Icy coldness then a fiery burn as his skin parted. It throbbed and pulsed, but he’d had worse. More cuts were delivered with glee across his chest and shoulders. Blood splashed the sheet he lay on.

He closed his eyes, not wanting to see naked skin—his or hers. Shutting out the small discomfort wasn’t anything he wasn’t already used to. Life of a Blishue was all about pain.

“Open your eyes!”

Knowing better than to refuse an order, he did. Madness blazed in her black eyes. He’d been warned the Ne Reynian queen was surly, ill-tempered, and abusive when he went undercover. He knew she’d try to break him.

She griped the weapon, his blood tarnishing the blade. Her fingers also were stained. How often had she cut him? His clothes were in tatters, and so was his skin.

Tuesday Teaser

This is an excerpt from Frost's Bite, #3 in the Mystic Bay series.

Everybody was through eating, finally, and Jonas seriously thought about cheering. All this tension couldn’t be good for his digestion. Then Paul suggested that they wait in the living room while he and Andy cleaned the kitchen.

That meant he and Nicholas would end up alone with each other while they waited. He wasn’t sure that was the best idea. He needed a minute to get his body under control, for all the good it would do. Somehow Nicholas could smell what he was doing to Jonas.

“Oh, I can help Andy with that if you need to speak to—”

Nicholas grabbed Jonas by the hand and dragged him out of the kitchen. Jonas was still stuttering when Nicholas spun him, wrapped his arms around him, and stuck his tongue down his throat.

Jonas froze. Every thought in his head fled as Nicholas kissed him like there was no tomorrow. The taste of this man rocked Jonas to his very soul, and it terrified him.

When Nicholas pulled back, Jonas moaned. He dropped his head on Nicholas’s shoulder and heaved a deep breath. “You scramble my brain, and I really need caffeine in order to deal with you.”

“After we leave here, I will provide your much-needed coffee. Name the place.”

Jonas leaned back and studied Nicholas. “Did you just ask me out? I’m not sure since there was no asking in that that sentence.”

“I would be honored to provide you your much-needed coffee, then.”

Even if he’d wanted to, Jonas couldn’t have stopped smile that crossed his face. “You do know the difference between a statement and a question, right?”

“I do.”

Why not go out with Nicholas? He wanted to, and he was tired of being good all the time. He’d been called stuffy and straightlaced more than he cared to remember. He was tired of being alone all the time too.

He didn’t understand what this was between them, but why not enjoy it? He’d deal with the pain of it ending later, because it had to. There was no possible way they were mates. But what if they actually were?
