Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

~from Bound by War (Laken's upcoming book)

“Fuck, Laken, what the hell was that?”

“The next person who takes a step toward them will be dealing with me. Understand?” Hamza demanded.

There was grumbling, but Laken didn’t care. Well, he did, but he was too busy staring into eyes the color of amber. Beautiful. They were simply beautiful.

His gaze traveled over the too-thin body. The obvious proof of what Torin went through enraged Laken all over again. The lilac skin of the Blishue’s upper body sported ugly dark blue and yellow bruises, but it was the thick, pristine white bandage around Torin’s torso that worried him the most.

He whined deep in his throat. What horrors had that female visited upon his mate? He didn’t know—wasn’t even sure he could handle knowing. Nothing in his life could prepare him for whatever Torin went through, but he’d manage. Somehow.

“It’s not as bad as it looks.”

The melodious voice snapped Laken out of his critique of the injuries. He raised his eyes back to the face that had been wiped clean of blood, at least. “Neo said you might’ve died if you haven’t been brought aboard. I’d say it was serious enough.”

That alone terrified him to the depths of his soul. He could’ve lost his mate before he’d even found him.

“It’s very hard to kill a Blishue. I’m Torin.”

Someone muttered something sarcastic behind Laken. Most likely Raiden. But that did remind him he had an audience, so he shoved that terror into a dark little corner for now.

“Hard, but not impossible. I’m Laken. I guess you know everyone behind me.”

Look how nice and polite he was being when all he wanted to do was tackle Torin and kiss every inch of him. Of course, that thick white bandage reminded him why that would be a bad idea. Torin also needed a shower.

“I do. Some better than others. I’m sure they’d say that was most unfortunate.”

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

 ~From Bound by War

All his friends had been paired even before birth. Except him.

No one had any idea what kind of hole that left in his psyche. And now Raiden wanted to come in here and stomp all over his happiness? No. He wasn’t having it.

“Without Torin, there’s a distinct possibility I wouldn’t have had the chance to confront the person who murdered my dabba,” Hamza continued. “The gods only know what he survived from that female.”

“You can tell what he went through,” Laken snarled. “The proof is all over his body!”

“Would it help if I said I was sorry?” Torin asked quietly, swinging his legs over the edge of the medibed. “Because I am. I hated what I had to do to protect your mate, Raiden. I’m well aware it wasn’t enough.”

Chaos erupted.

“He’s awake? How the hell is he awake? He shouldn’t be awake!”

“Shit. Shit.

The voice behind him startled Laken so badly he swung around, the spines still extended. Torin calmly caught one of Laken’s arms, keeping the spines away. Electricity jumped between them.

The touch burned Laken but in the best of ways. He barely managed to stop the gasp that threatened to escape. Gods above, if he hadn’t, Raiden probably would’ve lost the rest of his mind and gone on a rampage. As it was, there was a scramble of feet behind Laken, and he hissed, the sound low, mean, and piercing.

“Fuck, Laken, what the hell was that?”

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

~from Bound by War

The pull had come from somewhere toward the back of Medical. Almost as if his feet had a mind of their own, they’d carried him back there… to the Blishue.

Pictures truly didn’t do them justice. They were reputed to be humanoid and over six and a half feet in height. Most were closer to seven foot. Height didn’t bother Laken. He’d spent his entire life surrounded by not only his dabba, but also hybrids, who all towered over him. He’d learned that the bigger they were, the harder they fell.

The sagittal crest that began on the forehead and continued over the skull was different than what he was used to, but he found it fascinating. Same with the horizontal ridges across the bridge of the nose.

He was pretty sure the long and kinky hair was a deep amethyst in color, but it was badly in need of a cleaning. It bothered him how dirty it was. He wanted to see it in all its glory.

Even knocked out and beat up, the male had radiated danger and menace, but there had been sex appeal interwoven with the other traits. Unable to help himself, Laken had edged closer to the medibed where the Blishue was being monitored, and the scent had been even stronger.

Excitement had torn through his body. His heart rate had spiked as one thought screamed through his mind: Mate! After all this time, he’d found the one for him.

Neo had told him of about a scent that would call to him and the need to protect. Fated mates were chosen by destiny or whatever one wanted to call it. All his friends had been paired even before birth.

Except him.

Teaser Tuesday - Bound by War

Raiden backed away from the medibed but crossed his arms over his chest. “And?”

Angered, Laken whistled, the frequency high pitched and painfully sharp.

“Dammit!” Raiden slapped his hands over his ears.

“Shit, Laken, what the hell?” Neo grimaced.

“Raiden, I swear, stop antagonizing him or you’re going to end up in a medibed too,” Hamza barked. “I understand why you feel like you do toward Torin. I also know if he hadn’t whipped Dayo, someone else would have had. Because of Torin, we knew where Dayo’s auction was being held and were able to rescue him.”

Raiden snarled.

“Hamza’s right,” Dayo said. “He wasn’t the one who kidnapped me, and he did all he could to help without blowing his cover.”

“And if it hadn’t been for Torin, things may have turned out a lot different for the Ne Reynians,” Hamza pressed onward.

Raiden’s top lip curled, exposing a pointy canine.

Laken was quickly approaching his breaking point with Raiden. This day should’ve been the best one of his life. He’d walked in Medical and had barely cleared the door before the most decadent scent ever had knocked him off his feet.

It had been dark, sultry, and spicy. Seductive and alluring. Dominating. It spoke to him, whispering things that made him needy. That scent. He couldn’t ignore it. It wouldn’t allow him to.

The pull had come from somewhere toward the back of Medical. Almost as if his feet had a mind of their own, they’d carried him back there… to the Blishue.

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is:
Sordaneon by L. L. Stephens
A note from me: This is NOT mm. It's NOT mm romance. What it is, is a fabulous scifi/fantasy book that is a pure joy to read. I know the author, and her worldbuilding is some of the best there is.

Blurb:
Secrets sheathe swords.

A fallen world is littered with the corpses of broken god-machines, and a sheltered, angry youth is destined to re-awaken their power. But to embody a god, Dorilian Sordaneon must first learn to be human...

Dorilian is blood bound to the Rill, a quasi-living artifact that spans continents and empowers a privileged few to reap the riches of an entire civilization. Unfortunately, decades after seizing control of the remaining god-machines, those privileged few aren’t willing to give up their power—even if it means destroying the human bloodline to which the Rill is tethered.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

~More from Bound by War (Laken's book)

LAKEN HELD his hands out from his body, the long deadly spines that exploded from his knuckles ready to defend what was his. Blood pounded through his veins. His head thumped with the chant of mate, mate, mate.

His instincts screamed that danger, in the form of a tall, white-headed Tah’Narian, was coming for his mate. His body tensed, and his anger notched upward. He wouldn’t allow Raiden near the male in the medibed. Fear and anger battled equally inside him, but the one clear thought he had was that he must protect what was his.

Physically speaking, Laken was no match for Raiden. He simply didn’t have the height or the bulk. In a bare-knuckled fistfight, he was going to lose. But he did have the same damn training as Raiden, and he most definitely had a weapon—but he didn’t want to use those against Raiden.

He just wanted his friend to get his head out of his ass and back off.

“Everybody calmed down!” Hamza snapped. “Raiden? Back the hell away from the medibed before Laken comes after you with those  spiny things of his.”

“But it’s that damn Blishue! Why is he on this ship? We should’ve left him on-planet.”

“They weren’t capable of treating his injuries. At least, not right now. Not with how badly the war affected them. It’s why half the Unity’s medical staff is in a cargo bay here on the ship,” Neo said. “He might have died from blood loss if we hadn’t beamed him up.”

Raiden backed away from the medibed but crossed his arms over his chest. “And?”

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

The male’s fists clenched, and sharp spines erupted from his knuckles. Torin’s eyes widened. Someone was feeling threatened. This male was a hybrid. So, who’s young was this?

Raiden staggered to a halt. “Laken?”

Well, at least, Raiden was no longer focused on him.

“Oh, holy shit,” Dayo whispered.

Torin sounded the name out in his head. Laken. He liked it. He also liked everyone was ignoring him and hadn’t seemed to notice he was conscious.

“What the hell?” Raiden swore loudly at Laken. “Get away from that fucker. You know what he did to Dayo.”

How many times was he going to have to explain that? If it hadn’t been him, it would’ve been another Blishue. They wouldn’t have gone nearly as easy on Dayo as Torin had, although he understood Raiden’s anger. If someone had whipped this vision of beauty before him, he’d—wait. What?

Neo pressed his comm. “Raiden, you will not take another step toward the Blishue. As your king consort, I have spoken. Stand down. Now.”

Raiden gawked at Neo.

So maybe Torin would avoid the airlock after all.

The door to Medical swished open again, and Hamza stormed inside. “What in the ever-loving hell is going on?”

“Glad you got here so fast.” Neo smirked. “It seems that destiny—or whatever you want to call it, love—well, it might be a little late to the party, but it’s finally arrived for Laken.”

Raiden roared.

No doubt about it. Torin was airlock bound.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

“Dammit, Raiden, stop!” Neo yelled.

Torin’s eyes popped open.

“You will come no closer!”

Surprised by the possessiveness in the voice, Torin jerked his gaze to the male standing nearest his bed. This was the one with the arousing scent. He had swung around, chimes sounding softly as he put his back to Torin’s medibed—and between Raiden and Torin.

That was the sound he’d heard earlier. After all the time he’d spent with the Ne Reyn, he should’ve recognized it. Torin’s gaze traveled over the male. Interesting. He didn’t have the light gray skin like a Ne Reynian. Instead, it was the deep tan of the Tah’Narians.

Long cerulean blue hair fell halfway down a naked back. Torin wanted to touch it. Maybe grab a handful and tug. His body warmed at the thought. The male wore a silky, cobalt blue sarong tied at the waist—typical Ne Reynian dress.

But the pointed ears that sat upon his head was pure Tah’Narian. As was the tail that skittered on the floor. His build was delicate and slender, which was a distinctive Ne Reynian males’ trait, even though he was taller than most.

The male’s fists clenched, and sharp spines erupted from his knuckles. Torin’s eyes widened. Someone was feeling threatened. This male was a hybrid. So, who’s young was this?

Raiden staggered to a halt. “Laken?”

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: Training Season (Training Season Series Book 1) by Leta Blake

Blurb: Can a cowboy’s firm hand discipline this feisty figure skater—on and off the ice?

Matty Marcus fears he doesn’t have what it takes to achieve his Olympic dream. His self-esteem is at an all-time low after figure skating coaches and skating judges have told him he’s not skinny enough, good enough, or masculine enough to win.

Matty wishes he could afford the kind of coach he needs, a top-notch one who specializes in keeping their skaters focused. But those coaches are ridiculously expensive, and Matty is financially strapped.

Until a lucrative house-sitting gig brings him to rural Montana.

And to Rob.

No one has ever looked at Matty the way rural cowboy and single dad Rob Lovely looks at him. No one has ever touched him, loved him, and healed him from the inside out. No one has ever made him feel so valuable and adored. Worthy. Strong.

No one has ever taught Matty how to fly. Or how to lose.

Rob might be a cowboy who knows nothing about figure skating, but after only a few months, he’s trained a new kind of bravery into Matty’s soul.

However, to achieve his Olympic dream, Matty will have to face the ultimate test. Has he truly learned what it means to win—on and off the ice—during his training season?

Training Season is a MM romance with a feisty, flamboyant figure skater and an easy-going dominant cowboy, opposites attract, hurt-comfort, single dad, winter holiday highlights, love beyond reason, multiple steamy scenes, and a well-earned happy ending. This book contains BDSM elements.

Tuesday Teaser - Bound by War

Torin wasn’t sure if this starship’s Medical was where Neo practiced, but he was still a doctor, and as such, he’d bet his favorite blade that Neo’s instinct as a doctor said not to let Raiden get any closer. Torin wholeheartedly agreed.

“Let me go.”

“Nope. I don’t know what’s going on with you, but you’re close enough.”

“I….”

It sounded as if Raiden shook his arm, like maybe he was trying to get Neo to let go.

“Again, nope. You need to get ahold of yourself.”

The door to Medical swished open again, and someone new hurried inside. This place had more traffic than a space station.

“Shit, has Raiden been by—oh thank the gods. You caught him. Raiden? What the hell are you doing?”

Torin recognized that voice too. Just what he didn’t need in there with him: Raiden and Dayo.

“I’d like an answer to that also,” Neo said.

Torin had a pretty good idea what Raiden was doing.

A low growl sounded. “That looks like—”

“Oh no. It can’t be—”

“Torin!” Raiden bellowed. “That’s the fucking Blishue who beat Dayo. Son of a bitch, it’s that fucker! I’m going to kill the bastard.”

There was a “pounding” sensation in his chest, his breathing spiked, and his muscles warmed as blood flow increased. Suddenly all his limbs responded and he control of his body finally. Amazing what a high-pressure situation and adrenaline could do.

“Dammit, Raiden, stop!” Neo yelled.

Torin’s eyes popped open.

“You will come no closer!”

Surprised by the possessiveness in the voice, Torin jerked his gaze to the male standing nearest his bed.

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: Top Priority (The Game Series Book 1) by Cara Dee

Blurb: The Game Series #1

In a perfect world, Lucas West would meet someone in one of the BDSM communities he was active in, someone who ached for a Daddy Dom as much as Lucas longed for a Little to care for. They would date, play, build something that was just for them, and share a future together.

In a perfect world, Colt Carter would get through his next deployment and then move closer to DC where he could create at least a semblance of a personal life. He wanted something outside of the Air Force, something kinky, something worth leaving everything behind for eventually. For years, he’d kept his inner Sadist and Daddy Dom locked up, only letting him out to play on rare occasions.

In a perfect world…

In reality, Lucas and Colt met each other.

The Game Series is a BDSM series with gay pairings where romance meets the reality of kink. Sometimes we fall for someone we don’t match with, sometimes vanilla business gets in the way of kinky pleasure, and sometimes we have to compromise and push ourselves to overcome trauma and insecurities. No matter what, two things are certain. This is not a perfect world, and life never turns out the way you planned.

Tuesday Teaser-Bound by War

(Okay, so, since it's been awhile, here's where we're at in Bound by War. This is taking place on the Unity. At the end of Bound by LovePrincess Dossi has killed her mother and declared herself queen. As Queen Dossi deals with her royal court, Grand Lady Impur has requested Neo examine the spy. Neo takes one look at the male, who is beat to hell and unconscious, and immediately has the Blishue transported to the Unity. Raiden is the one speaking at first, but this is from the  blishue's POV.)

“I heard we transported up a Blishue. I couldn’t believe we allowed that kind of space trash on this ship, so I had to come and see.”

A rush of footsteps came toward him. The harsh clanking of bells. He really, really needed to get his eyes opened if the growls he heard were any indication. He tried to lift his hand. His finger twitched instead. That was not remotely helpful.

He’d just remembered why the name Unity was so important. That was the starship where Raiden and Dayo were assigned. The same Raiden who was mated to Dayo, the same Dayo who had been kidnapped and Torin had been forced to whip. Raiden was probably going to eject him through the nearest airlock.

“That’s far enough.”

Torin wasn’t sure if this starship’s Medical was where Neo practiced, but he was still a doctor, and as such, he’d bet his favorite blade that Neo’s instinct as a doctor said not to let Raiden get any closer. Torin wholeheartedly agreed.

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: The Perfect Dom by Shannon West

Blurb:

Jordy wants to break out of his mold, change his life and do exciting things on the weekends like his best friend and work confidante, Tori, who also has a slightly scandalous secret. Tori is a Domme at local club, with a sexy submissive and an exciting sex life. Jordy has been living vicariously through her adventures for a while now, but he’s decided he wants to be a Dom too—but not just any Dom. He wants to be the perfect Dom, with the perfect sub. He just hasn’t been ready yet to take the necessary steps to get there. He was definitely working on it though. Kind of. When Tori invites him to her club, he’s anxious to go and learn more. He’s definitely excited about the idea of a relationship where he holds all the power. It would make a nice change from work, where his new boss is a tyrant who’s mean to him and drives him crazy.

When experienced Dom Logan arrives at his club to do a demo on Shibari, he looks out over his audience and is shocked to see two familiar faces—two secretaries from his own office. Since he never mixes business with pleasure and prefers to wear a mask at the club, they don’t recognize him, and he’s fine with that. But one of them—Jordy—is the beautiful bane of his existence. He’s incompetent, disobedient and altogether a brat—Logan has wanted him from the first time he saw him. He’d be crazy to get anything started with the man, but he’s almost impossible to resist. What harm would there be in a simple demonstration that even a novice could handle? Just one night--and then he never has to touch the gorgeous Jordy again. Nothing could possibly go wrong. Could it?

Tuesday Teaser - At Sixes and Sevens

Today's teaser is from Sixes and Sevens. This is Aidric and Carter's story. (This is in Carter's POV.)

Buy link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WWBNQG4

I threw back my head and howled, the chilling sound rising until it reached a crescendo. That should catch Temple and Shea’s attention. I lowered my head and stared at Delaney, watching and waiting.

Focused on my opponent, I watched Delaney’s eyes, looking for a sign that would betray what he planned…. Ah, there it was—a quick look at my front legs. Delaney lunged, aiming his immense jaw for my foreleg.

Reading his intent clearly, I also surged forward, head-butting Delaney, making him stagger back. He shook his head, whimpered, then snapped to attention as I circled him. Delaney swiped at me with his massive paws but only managed to land a few hits. Pitiful. There were pups better trained than this.

I blocked the majority of his attacks and got a few of my own in. Lucky for him I wasn’t trying to kill him. Delaney had several cuts that seeped blood. As we fought, our growls brought pack members running. I leaped at Delaney, teeth slashing. Delaney mostly managed to dodge me, but his right claws caught my muzzle, and deep scratches dripped blood. That shit stung.

Shea and Temple’s voices drifted over the rumblings of the crowd. I relaxed. While I dealt with this, one beta would protect my mate while the other ensured nobody jumped into the middle of the brawl.

Delaney, in desperation, took chances that left him open and vulnerable. I didn’t want to maim him, just teach Delaney a lesson. Maybe hurt him a little. Okay, more than a little, but he’d live. My pack needed to understand I’d punish anyone who threatened my mate.

Moving quickly, I pushed Delaney onto his back and pinned him there with my larger body. Whipping his head back and forth, Delaney snarled in frustration, unable to dislodge me. Using his paws, Delaney attempted to push me off him, but on his back and unable to regain his footing, Delaney was trapped.

Delaney whined sharply but still refused to submit. The more Delaney struggled, the more I nipped him, drawing blood. After several minutes of squirming, snapping, and snarling, I had enough.

Baring my teeth, I lunged and closed them around Delaney’s throat. Delaney froze under me, his cry high-pitched and fearful. I snarled, low and fierce, shaking my head in warning. Although I didn’t want to, I would rip his throat out if he forced my hand. A loud, frantic yip from the other wolf signaled he finally submitted.

“Alpha, let him go, please.” Temple spoke softly, not far from me. “Delaney submitted, and I’m sure he learned his lesson. Let him go and check on your mate.”

After one final shake for emphasis, I released Delaney. Tongue hanging out, I trotted over to where Aidric stood next to Shea. My wolf, finally having the opportunity to meet Aidric, wanted to make a point the pack couldn’t ignore. I rubbed against Aidric, covering him in my scent, then sniffed him.

He smelled… different. Not bad, just not wolf. I sniffed harder. What was that scent? Not wolf, but…? I stuck my nose in his crotch and sniffed as hard as I could. A strangled yell came somewhere from above my head and then hands were pushing at my head.

“Good goddess, did you have to stick your nose there?”

Shea stood next to my mate, laughing, although I didn’t know why. Was Aidric afraid? I couldn’t have that. I dropped my ass on the ground and did my best imitation of a friendly wolf. I sniffed again. Okay, so not scared. I didn’t smell fear.

Aidric finally reached out and scratched me behind an ear. My eyes crossed. Oh. Oh that was so good. How did he know? My back leg started jumping. I needed to get closer. Aidric smelled so good, so… so… mine. I scooted nearer, and Aidric stumbled back. Why was he moving away?

I didn’t want him moving away; I wanted him closer. He really needed to be covered in my scent too. Too many wolves were around, and my pretty kitty was unclaimed. I’d covered the bottom half of him, but… I eyed Aidric, then hopped up on my back legs setting my front paws to rest on Aidric’s shoulders.

“Holy fuck!” Aidric yelled, grabbing my front legs.

Ha! Standing up like this I was still taller than him. Funny! I decided to share the funny with him. Facing him, I went on to tell him just how funny I found that. I huffed, yelped, and yipped, then ran my tongue along the side of his face.

“Oh shit, please tell me someone’s getting this with their cell phone.” Shea laughed hysterically.

What? What was I doing that need to be recorded with the cell phone? I didn’t see what the big deal was, so I dropped back down onto four paws and head-butted Shea as hard as I could. When he ended up on his ass, I pranced around him, tail wagging madly and barking. Now that was funny. I stuck my muzzle right in his face and told him all about it.

“Damn, man, you needed a TicTac. Your breath smells like… yeah. Ugh.” Shea pushed my muzzle out of his face.

We were odd creatures when in our human forms, and my breath was just fine. Speaking of creatures, I bounced back to my mate and started rubbing and sniffing him again. What was that scent? It reminded me of happy times, sunny days, freshly mowed lawns… and vanilla. I’d never played with a cat before. Could I get him to shift? I wanted him to shift! I wanted to see the pretty kitty.

“Jeez, are you always this giddy when you kick ass?” Aidric asked.

“I can safely say I’ve never seen him act like this,” Temple said, choking on his laughter. “It’s kind of cute in an insane Carter type of way. But he really needs to shift back.”

Screw that. I didn’t want to shift back, so I turned my head and curled my upper lip, displaying a massive fang at Temple. I wanted to play with the kitty… I just needed the kitty to shift, so I barked at Aidric. Aidric, hands on his hips, shook his head.

Damn.

Thursday Book Rec

Thursday Book Recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is: Soul Eater: M/M Fantasy Romance (Monstrous Book 1) by Lily Mayne

Blurb:

Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.

One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.

Including Wyn the Soul Eater.

He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.

I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that… something about me has intrigued him.

But what is it? What could a twenty-three year old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?

Soul Eater is the debut novel of Lily Mayne. It is the first in a planned post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love. Warning: This m/m love story contains explicit content and is not suitable for young readers. There are also graphic depictions of torture and violence.

Heller unlocked his cell. “Hey babe, I—what? Lawson, stop yelling. I can’t….” Every drop of blood drained out of Heller’s face. “Oh goddess, are you okay? How bad? Where are you? Fuck. Are you sure…. What? Yes. Okay, yes, he’s right here with me. I… oh, fuck me, are you sure?” Heller glanced at me, his breathing spiking. “Okay, we’re on our way. Just… just hang on.”

No. No, no, no. No! My chest hurt so bad I couldn’t breathe. My head spun, and my stomach roiled nastily. I wanted to puke. Little flashing lights swam before my eyes. I grabbed the side of the truck to keep myself standing upright, even though my knees threatened to give out.

“Remi? Remi!”

Far off I heard someone yelling my name. My head hurt. My chest blazed with pain.

“Remi!”

I heard Lawson plain as day say hunters had attacked them… and Marshell was stabbed in the chest with a knife.

I lost you before I ever had a chance to know you. My vision went gray, and everything faded away.

“ARE YOU sure we should’ve brought him?”

“Yes. This isn’t going to be easy for him, but trying to keep him away would have been useless. At least this way I’m here. If I have to, I can control him.”

Voices teased my consciousness. Something nagged at me, some sense of urgency that demanded I wake and deal with it. I didn’t want to, though. I knew, I just knew something horrible waited for me. I was tempted to turn away, to let go… to sink back into the darkness where I was numb.

But I wasn’t one to run.

I opened my eyes. My Alpha’s scent, so warm and soothing, wrapped around me, although there was nothing sexual about it. His arm was around my shoulders and my head rested against his chest. His heart frantically pounded in my ear. Why was he holding me? I glanced around and finally figured out I was in a truck cab, and we were moving.

What was I doing here? It was dark out, but I could see Heller was driving, so…. We were in his truck? Maybe? The whine of the tires echoed in my ears. So silent. They were so silent, but something, some scent—it smelled like rotten eggs—saturated the cab of the truck.

“Remi?” My Alpha’s voice rumbled against my ear, comforting me.

Suddenly my cat screamed in my mind, a wailing stab of misery. My body locked up. Pain. Oh, the pain. Sharp and nasty, it spread through me as I remembered my mate was gone. The wail went on and on, whipping against my skin, my heart. All I could do was suffer, the sound hammering at me—filling me up until there was nothing but hot, searing agony.

The scent was grief.

“He’s dead, isn’t he?” I croaked. My throat hurt. Had I been screaming? The scent of their grief increased, all but choking me.

“We don’t know anything for sure.” Heller clutched the wheel. “Lawson was nearly hysterical. He was yelling about hunters and knives and blood and…. Gods, someone tape my mouth shut, please. Fuck, I’m sorry, man. I probably shouldn’t have said that, but I’m also freaked the fuck out.”

Hearing that said out loud stabbed me in the heart. “I overheard Lawson telling you Marshell had been stabbed in the chest… in the heart. He’s dead, Heller. You can’t stab someone in the heart and have them not be dead.” Agony screeched across my nerves as my cat demanded out. “What happened?”

Look at me using complete sentences and everything.

“I didn’t talk to Lawson long because I needed to get help, and you passed out.” Heller’s voice was eerily devoid of emotions. “Lawson said they were run off the road by two hunters who then attacked them.”

That’s right, I remembered Lawson saying that now. Run off the road. That meant the hunters had staked Marshell out. How did they find him? Why were they doing this? I didn’t remember any hunters ever coming after our kind. “Is… is Lawson okay?”

“He’s… yeah, pretty much. He took a few hits, but nothing too bad.”

It pained me to hear how Heller’s voice shook. I was so lost in my misery, I hadn’t stopped to think about how Heller was doing. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah. Lawson gave as good as he got. He’s stronger and heals faster now, thank fuck. One hunter went after him, but he said she seemed more concerned with keeping him busy. He got her pretty good too, he said. The other hunter went after Marshell.”

“And stabbed him,” I said dully. My skin rippled with the need to shift.

“No. Don’t shift,” Alpha Armonty demanded, his voice taking on that powerful, unnatural tone that was impossible to ignore—his Alpha voice. “Not here in the truck. It isn’t safe.” I couldn’t refuse an outright order from my Alpha.

My cat settled down, but the anger and pain still swirled in my mind. There was no escaping it. How was I going to live with this anguish? I wanted to scream, yell, rip into something until I tasted blood—just claw it all to pieces.

I was afraid once I did shift, I wouldn’t change back to human anytime soon. Maybe that was better. My cat didn’t care for the things that occupied my human mind—his needs were more basic.

“Why are…. Where are we going? Where are they?” I asked. I needed to distract myself from the pressing need to shift.

“The attack happened not far from Marshell’s home. The hunters ran off after…. Um, Lawson’s truck won’t start,” Heller said. “They’re sitting out there on the side of the road, and one of them has a large… ah, that is to say—”

“What Heller means is Lawson got Marshell in the truck, so they have some privacy, but yes, we do need to get there before someone stops to help or calls the cops. We don’t need that,” Alpha Armonty said.

I was drowning. My mate was on the side of the road with a fucking knife buried in his chest. Yeah, having humans see that could present a problem for our kind, but it really didn’t matter to me. Fuck the humans. It was humans who killed my mate. Call me crazy, but that took precedence in my mind over any human.

“Dolf and the rest of the betas are on the way there too. We’ll take care of everything. You just… just—”

“Not lose my shit?”

“Yes,” Alpha Armonty said. “I’m so sorry. We’re here for you. We’ll help you—whatever you need.”

Nothing could help me, but I didn’t say that. What I needed was gone. At least we hadn’t mated. If that tie had existed between us, I wasn’t sure I could’ve survived Marshell’s death. The way I felt right now, I wasn’t sure I was going to make it anyway.

“Someone needs to call his sister,” I said.

“Oh, I’m willing to bet that was the second phone call Lawson made.” A grimace crossed Heller’s face. “If he did, then we need to be prepared for Janelle.”

“What do you mean?” Alpha Armonty asked. “Prepared how?”

“We don’t really know that much about the Vetala, but from what I’ve heard Lawson say, their females are the more… violent ones. I don’t think she’d hurt any of us since she’s part of our clowder, but she’s going to be wild with grief. I wouldn’t…. Don’t try to protect the little woman, is what I’m saying.”

“I don’t think she should be there, but I understand,” Alpha Armonty said.

“Wild horses couldn’t drag her away.” Heller sighed. “Lawson’s going to need her, and frankly…. What the hell?”

“What?” Alpha Armonty asked.

Heller stared up at the rearview mirror. “There’s a car coming up fast.”

It zoomed past us, not even slowing down. The taillights disappeared in the night.

“Oh, fuck me running, that was Janelle. Damn woman drives like a bat out of hell,” Heller snarled. “She better not wrap herself around a telephone pole. I’ll kill her if she does. That’s the last thing Lawson needs right now.”

It was the last thing any of us needed, but I didn’t say that. Not long after she passed us, we saw Lawson’s truck sitting off the side of the road. Janelle’s car was in front of them. I wasn’t ready for this. What if I… what if I completely freaked out? What if I lost it right there?

Heller pulled in behind Lawson’s truck. The vehicle used to attack Lawson and Marshell was nowhere in sight. My Alpha barely got out of the truck before I too was out. I ran toward the other truck. The passenger door was open. Janelle and Lawson were crowded around the door. I heard Heller yell Lawson’s name. His fear barely penetrated the fog of despair around me.

“I’m fine… oomph! Heller, really, I’m okay. Come on, hellcat. Easy there.”

I heard them, but all I could see was Marshell’s long braids through the back window. My mate. The scent of blood and violence still hung in the air. Just as I drew even with the back of the truck, I heard an impressive string of creative cuss words from Janelle. Well, guess that’s better than what Heller hinted at. Somehow I thought she’d be more…. I didn’t know more what, just more.

Janelle swung around and grabbed both my arms. “He’s not dead!”
