Thursday book recommendation

These are books I’ve read and really enjoyed. Most of what I talk about will probably be paranormal/scifi but not always. Although it’s rare, I do read some contemporary.

This week is:  Constant (The Valespian Pact Book 3) by Lexi Ander

Blurb:
Can a Warlord and a Prince find love when the galaxy is on the brink of war?

Chief Warlord Sohm'lan has a job he loves protecting the family who claims him as one of their own. He has known the loss of a mate and believed he would walk alone for the rest of his life… that is until Prince Mestor demanded more from him than duty. Unable to fathom why Mestor would want a widowed older warrior, Sohm'lan maintains his distance believing Mestor will eventually choose an amor closer in age and experience, even though the thought causes him more pain than it should.

Prince Mestor is tired of pretending and his patience is eroding. He needs Sohm'lan to see past their respective ranks and duties to who Mestor is underneath it all. Worried Sohm'lan will be lost to him if he pushes too hard, Mestor and Sohm'lan are caught in a dance of denied desires and tangled obligations.

Warlord Sohm'lan and Prince Mestor struggle to find a way to their heart's desire against the backdrop of galactic conspiracies, the dangerous mission escorting the Fal'Amoric royals, and discoveries within the Vondorian family that threaten to tear apart everything they hold dear. The two of them stand together to fight the coming battle whatever the consequences.

*Note: Constant is 250,000 words and is the third book in the series that must be read in order.

My thoughtsIt’s here! It’s here! Y’all, when I heard this book was coming, I can not tell you how loudly I yelled lol. I’m a huge fan of this series. You want excellent scifi worldbuilding, this is the book for you. The details are so clear, so crisp…. It’ll impress you. It did me. Lexi doesn’t build just one world. No, she builds a whole frigging universe lol. Speaking from experience, that’s not easy!

This book covers Warlord Sohm’lan and Prince Mestor’s relationship, but it’s so much more than that. We get an in-depth look at the younglings of the royal Vondorion family. We see how they feel, how they react to what’s going on with Zeus and other plot points.

You absolutely need to read Alpha Trine and Striker first, or you will be completely lost, in my opinion. This story runs parallel to events in Striker but the overall plot *is* continued. Make sure you have plenty of time when you start this. You won’t want to put it down lol.

Tease Me Thursday - The Yellow Rope

Welcome to Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from The Yellow Rope.

Excerpt:

“Hey, babe, glad you’re home.” Gage turned in the arms that held him and returned the hug.

“So am I. It was a really, really long day.” Luke stepped back and loosened his tie. It’d been strangling him for the better part of the day. “Been in meetings for most of the morning, and oh joy, since this was a county wide in-service, we had to dress.”

“I know. I enjoyed listening to you bitch about that very thing this morning while I was trying to get dressed.” Gage tapped the end of Luke’s nose. “But you do look good in a suit. And I so enjoy taking it off you.”

Luke laughed, shaking his head. “You always say that, but I’d rather be in jeans. You like taking those off, too."

“You bet.”

“Perv.”

“You know it.” Gage winked as he turned back to the stove to test the spaghetti sauce.

Welcome to Tease Me Thursday - Shadows in the Night

Welcome to Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from Shadows in the Night.

THE black cougar pulled the blanket to mid-hip. Chip’s chest was still bare, but hey, he had to get his kicks somehow.
Ugh, raw steak. Stereotypical response. See what looks like a wild animal and offer it raw, bloody meat. I prefer mine medium-well, Chip.
He made another loop around the living area. As far as he could tell, things had calmed down outside and the other shifter was gone. The appearance of a new cougar worried him. He knew who all the shifters were in town, and this one, he didn’t recognize. There was something about its scent too—he smelled off. Wrong. He had made eye contact when they fought and there was nothing, no humanity in the other cougar’s eyes. All of his kind retained their morals while in spirit form. Whoever this was had targeted Chip, and that was a mistake. Messing with a shifter’s mate not only could result in death, but usually did. His kind tended to be… possessive.
He glanced back at Chip. His human was snoring. All the excitement must have worn him out.
And what the hell is up with the “boy” nickname all of a sudden? Do I look like a boy? We’ll see who the “boy” is when I get your ass in bed and you’re under me screaming my name. Frankly, I don’t think I can afford to wait much longer, with the appearance of that other shifter. Of course, you need to know whose name to yell. First thing tomorrow, I plan to remedy that, thanks to the Other. Just wish it didn’t have to be done like this.
He’d taken to calling the new shifter Other simply because he didn’t know who he was. Hours passed, and the night sky lightened as daybreak approached. He decided it was safe for him to leave. There had been no sign of the new shifter for hours.
Should I wake him? Ah well, where’s the fun in that? Time to make a point, I think. One that he can’t ignore. Might as well, because come tomorrow, he’s going to have to deal with the fact things aren’t what they seem around here.

Tease Me Thursday Week #19 - To Touch the Sky

Welcome to week 19 of Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from To Touch the Sky, the WIP I'm working on.

On a star-filled night, the full moon shone brightly over the untamed land. Predators, nothing but shadows in the dark, moved through the forest hunting for unsuspecting prey. A symphony of sound echoed all around. Tree frogs sang, crickets chirped, and a raccoon prowled in search of something to fill his empty belly. A barred owl hooted, his call reverberating into the night. Bats silently dipped and spun, hunting for food on the warm air currents as danger lurked.
A wolf howled, his cry crossing the land, then fading. A mysterious shadow moved through the forest, tracking the docile prey not far beyond the safety of the trees. Out on the moon-draped landscape, the plains reached for miles. The buffalo stood silently as the night held the land tight in its grip.
In this wild land there was only one creature who walked upright, stalking the flat plains and rolling hills on two legs. The Great Spirit, called Wha-tay, had created Mother Earth. Then her children, The People, inhabited the land and settled at The Tree of Life—the soul of Mother Earth. Each child born to The People was bound with a spirit—could be a land spirit, a water spirit, a plant spirit, or an animal spirit. Once bound, they had the ability to use the gifts the spirit had. Children of Wha-tay lived in harmony with the creatures around them. The land provided what they needed to survive, and they gave thanks for the sacrifices made to support them.
“It’s too damn bright, Mapiya. Do something.”
“Would you give me a second, Chetan? It’s not like I can just pull a cloudy night out of my ass.”
Mapiya’s totem had the ability to control the weather. Mapiya cleared her thoughts, letting the words that would bring her powers fill her mind. Closing her eyes, she gave her body over to her totem spirit and called to the Spirits that ruled the air. Taking a deep breath, she began to chant.

A cool, gentle breeze wrapped around her body. The clear nighttime sky slowly filled with rolling clouds that blocked the moonbeams. The silvery light faded as the night darkened. Mapiya’s long hair whipped above her head as the breeze strengthened. Opening her eyes, she cast the land in shadows. Her eyes were a milky white and glowed with power.

Tease Me Thursday Week 18 - Trouble Comes in Threes

Welcome to week 18 of Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from Trouble Comes in Thees since it was accepted by Dreamspinner Press. Release date is Dec/Jan.

Trouble Comes in Threes

Dolf picked out the saw he wanted, then followed Tal to another aisle. His mate pointed out the different kinds, but Tal’s words had rapidly faded into a meaningless buzz. There, on the air currents in the store, was the sweetest scent. It was light and flowery, reminding him of honeysuckle. He breathed deeply, taking the scent into himself. His cock hardened immediately, and his head spun. A yowl threatened to escape. That scent… that scent was seductive and alluring. It spoke to him, whispering things that made him need. His cat paced frantically in his mind, tail slashing madly. The need to pounce, to sink his canines in and drink that sweet, life-giving blood of his… His gums tingled and saliva flooded his mouth.
He swallowed, then swallowed again as his head pounded, his heart rate spiking as one word screamed through his mind: Mate! Another mate! Where was that scent coming from? Or who? And by the goddess, why? He already had a mate. What was their goddess thinking giving him another? But he couldn’t ignore the reaction.  It had been the same when he met Tal.
A quick glance down the aisle showed a human male muttering at commode kits. Dolf wanted to roll his eyes. Commode kits? Really? The same thing they were looking for? Their goddess must be having a high old time with this.
“Fuck,” he whispered softly. He rarely cussed, except when aroused. Nothing sent his mate whimpering faster than Dolf describing in frank detail how he planned to fuck Tal. He loved hearing Tal’s voice begging… and speaking of that, only then did he notice Tal had stopped talking. Not only had Tal stopped talking, now he was growling. It was low, but it was a growl; a sound no human would make.
“Tal,” Dolf whispered. “Look at me, mate.”
Tal’s fist clenched, spasms shaking his arms. “That scent…”

“I know. Look at me. You’re growling, and you can’t do that here. Talise!” Dolf’s voice dropped as he snapped out Tal’s full name, power and command flowing from him. His mate was close to losing control right there in a hardware warehouse. “Stop. Now.”

Tease Me Thursday Week 17 - Priceless

Welcome to week 17 of Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from my novella, Priceless

Priceless

“Garrett,” Randy gasped as Garrett found a particularly good spot, “there’s gotta be cameras in here.”

Garrett held Randy tightly for a moment, their bodies crushed together, before he released him and moved away. He mumbled under his breath about how could Randy think, much less clearly, at that moment. Randy leaned against the elevator wall, eyes closed, and tried to bring his rampaging body under control. The elevator dinged and lurched to a stop, causing Randy to stumble into Garrett. He slid his arm around Randy to steady him and didn’t let go when the doors parted. Garrett pulled Randy toward his suite, throwing the door open. Once inside he slammed the door shut, spun Randy around, and trapped him against the back of the door. He slammed his mouth over Randy’s, picking up where he left off in the elevator until Randy was gasping for air.

“Let me be very clear,” Garrett panted into his mouth. “I want you in my bed. I want you desperate, wild, and begging.”

“I’m to the desperate phase now.” Randy trembled, trapped between him and the door. “Wild is right around the corner, and begging isn’t far behind.”

Garrett’s thumb traced over Randy’s swollen bottom lip. “That’s what I like about you, Randy, you speak your mind and don’t play games. I can’t tell you what a turn on that is for me.”

“I don’t have the first clue how to play games like you’re talking about, nor do I want to.”

“And thank God for it.” That jaded little devil on Garrett’s shoulder rolled his eyes. This guy either was very good, or very innocent. “Now, let me show you my bedroom. I can’t wait much longer to have you in my bed.”

Tease Me Thursday - Week 16

Welcome to week 16 of Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.

For this week, I thought I’d do something from Trouble Comes in Threes. Still waiting to hear something too, but it's only been a month. Hopefully I'll hear something soon!
~M

Touble Comes in Threes
I gulped. Why was dude stripping? The view was damn nice but… “Ah, look, you don’t have to… Wait a minute. Are those my clothes? Those are my clothes you’re wearing, aren’t they? What the fuck?” And why was I even remotely worried about him wearing my clothes? Just how hard had I rattled my brain? I wish he’d put them back on at this point. It would make me feel a hell of a lot better.

Tal cocked his head. “They are your clothes, yes. We came here as cats, remember? So we had no way to bring our clothes with us. Clothes don’t just magically appear when we shift. We had to borrow yours, of course.”
“Of course.” Like I should know that. “Wait, did you just say they don’t magically… That you… Ah, dude, why are you kneeling on the floor?” Holy shit, did we just go from the Twilight Zone to Kink City?
Tal grinned at Kirk. “I like being close to the ground when I shift. It’s easier.”
“Right. Close to the—”
My mouth dropped open as the cute blond-haired guy groaned loudly. Sounds filled the room. Oh God, my stomach cramped… and I was sure I was going to be sick. That… that sound. Jesus. I’d heard something similar when I broke my arm as a kid. This sounded amazingly like that. Truly cringe-worthy. My shoulders hunched and my toes curled. That sound was worse than nails down a chalkboard, but that was nothing compared to what I was seeing in front of me.

 “Oh. My. Fucking. God.”

Tease Me Thursday week #15 - Be My Alien

Welcome to week 15 of Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from Be My Alien from the Moonlit series. Book #2 called Be My Human, is due out in September/October.

Reed shifted under the body lying so contentedly on top of him. Hell’s bells, the guy fit against him perfectly. From the feel of things, they were both close to the same height. Which also meant certain things were… aligned. “Oh yeah, I’m okay. Banged my head a little, but I’m fine.”
The stranger bit his bottom lip, his teeth worrying the tender skin. Reed debated slamming his head against the floor a few more times in the hopes of rattling his brain back to normal as the stranger rolled off him.
“I really am sorry.”
“No harm done.” Reed sat up and looked at the guy once again. Well, not much harm, anyway. His libido just had to pick now to perk up, didn’t it? But damn, this guy was sexy. Reed struggled to his feet and held his hand out to the man still on the floor, looking up at him. The guy took his hand and let Reed pull him up. “Name’s Reed. Are you okay?”
“Hi, Reed!” The guy hopped to his feet in a single, lithe movement, as if it was the most….world. “My name is Taz. Nice to meet you, and yes, I am.”
For a moment there was a flash in the guy’s eyes that belied his statement. “Good, that’s good. Glad to hear it. Well, I guess I’d better be going—”
A forlorn expression crossed Taz’s face and his pretty eyes clouded. “Oh.”

Gage returned, both hands behind his back. “Here we go.”
“Sir?”
“Hold on, you’ll love this.” Gage walked closer, a fiendish smile on his face.
“Oh, Jesus, now what?” If it would help he’d beg, but he knew it wouldn’t. At least his orgasm had backed off.
Gage held up a can of whipped cream and Luke’s toes curled. “What’s that…Oh, my God, Gage!” Luke shouted as Gage sprayed the whipped cream straight on one of his nipples. “Cold—that’s damn cold!”
Luke grunted as Gage’s warm mouth covered his creamed-covered nipple, sucking and nibbling. He was still babbling when Gage raised his head and tapped his mouth.
“Suck them, or I gag you.” Gage set the can of spray cream down.

Trouble Comes in Threes

Meow!” On the table sat one of the biggest black cats I’d ever seen, giving me the eye.
“Oh fuck me, you have got to be kidding. I don’t think so, pal.” I didn’t have anything against cats. It was just… I was barely taking care of myself, so how was I supposed to take care of a cat?xt my house started falling apart, and every appliance I owned stopped working.  Of course they were out of warranty. That superstitious old saying about trouble comes in threes? Well, I was waiting for ‘number three’ to show up and kick me in the ball at any time.
“Okay, cat, let’s go.” I pointed at the open door, finger not quivering, voice strong and steady. Cool, check me out. I sounded commanding. Authoritative. I even impressed myself.
The cat looked at me and flicked his tail. Then the damn thing shot out his back leg and started licking it.
“Seriously?”
The cat didn’t seemed half as impressed as I was with myself. Figures. I couldn’t even intimidate a stupid cat. Color me wuss. I shivered in the cold draft from the open door… Shit, the door was still open. Heat gushed out while I tried talking a cat out the damn door. And he wasn’t having any of it, seemed like.
“Here, kitty, kitty.” Again I called to the cat, and again the cat ignored me. Okay, it appeared we were at a standoff. I nodded my head at the open door. The cat licked its balls. Alrighty then. Guess that answered that. Ball licking won over stupid head nod any day of the week. I shut the door.

~Excerpt:
Jase caught the waiter’s eye and motioned him over. “Okay, we’re both driving, so no more drinking. But—”
“Is there something else, sir?” the waiter asked. “Dessert, maybe?”
“Yeah, bring us that big, gooey chocolate cake thing with the ice cream and the white stuff on the top,” Jase said. “Bring coffee with it. Add it, and his meal, to my bill.”
Toshi’s eyes followed the waiter as he walked away, a shy smile teasing his lips. “Jase, you didn’t have to do that, really. But thank you.”
Jase shifted in the booth, trying to find a comfortable position to accommodate the swelling in his jeans. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this affected by a simple smile. But damn, Toshi had a nice smile. Jase noticed the button-up shirt Toshi wore was open at the throat, and what little of his chest he could see looked to be smooth.
Jase’s dick swelled more as he imagined that smooth chest lying bare before him, and that blush of his, dear God. When he blushed, it was all Jase could do not to pull Toshi up on the table, pull his jeans off, tie those slim legs open and have him for dessert. He’d look good covered in chocolate, some cream of Jase’s making, and Toshi could supply the… ah, nuts.
Jesus.

Tease Me Thursday Week 8 - Haunting the Night

Welcome to week 8 of Tease Me Thursday! When it's not quite Friday, and you're feeling like some fun from your favorite authors and authors you haven't met yet. Come on in, have a seat, and most of all... have fun! For this hop you post 7 paragraphs or 7 sentences or 7 words. It can be from a WIP or something published.
For this week, I thought I’d do something from Haunting the Night. It’s the 3rd in the Bad Boys Club series. Be warned. This is a Dark Desires story. There is a happy ending… of a sort.

Haunting the Night
Tobis ignored him. “You prey on those weaker than yourself, without thought or care to what you’re doing to them. And you don’t think about it because they’re nothing, right? Just dirt beneath your feet -- no one of importance. Oh yes, you’re so coldly unconcerned about your fellow human. I like that about you, Hugh.”

Fellow human? Did he just say human? This screwball has more than one bolt loose and, dear God, I’m trapped in here with him. Trying not to panic, Hugh resorted to the only thing he knew might save him… his family’s name and power.

“You should know my father is a very powerful man, with connections reaching as high up as Washington, DC, and he’s a well-known lawyer too. He owns one of the most prestigious law firms in the country. You don’t want to mess with him, trust me. Just take my wallet and get the hell out of here. I won’t call the police.”

“I’m not afraid of your father, Hugh. There’s nothing he can do to me.” Tobis allowed his eyes to turn that bright yellow, ringed-in-black, that signified what he was, as his nails grew into long points. “And it’s not your wallet I want, either.”

The horrified scream from across the room made him smile, exposing his canines even more. Gods, he just loved that sound. The sickly-sweet scent of fear filled the room, tickling his nose, and he breathed deeply, his dick hardening more. Just lovely. Hugh cowered against the leather chair across from him, his face pale as milk, his body rigid with horror.

He was willing to bet Hugh had never felt the emotions currently crashing through him. Oh no, he was too used to being the one in control, to having all the power in any given situation. He was going to enjoy stripping that power away, exposing that need. This was going to be so much fun. His wolf agreed.

What are you?”
