Teaser Tuesday

~Last teaser for Of Love and Shadows since it's now in editing! Release date is April 13th. I'll post the preorder link in another post.

A MADDENED howl startled Austin awake. It was loud, menacing, and his heart rate shot through the ceiling when Kage jackknifed up in bed.

“What the hell is going on?” Austin demanded.

“I’m not sure. But that howl? That’s a pissed off werewolf.” Kage threw the covers off of him.

“What?” Austin scrambled out of bed too.

From one second to the next, Kage’s human façade disappeared, and the daemon stood there. That, more than anything, told Austin something was horribly wrong.

“Get your shoes on and grab a shirt. Hurry. Stay right beside me, just in case,” Kage said.

Austin slammed his feet into his shoes and dragged a long-sleeved shirt over his head. He glanced at his cell phone, debated on leaving it, then stuck it in his pocket. He followed Kage out of the bedroom and into the living area.

Even though all the lights were off, and it was still pitch-black outside, Austin could see fairly well. Once more he was thankful that he drank Kage’s blood.

Otherwise, he would be stumbling around in the dark. A daemon could not turn a human like a vampire, mer, or a werewolf, so their only recourse to extend their human’s live was to share their blood.

Austin’s senses were now almost as good as a paranormals, and he was stronger, but he couldn’t open portals like a daemon could. But being bonded to Kage did give Austin the ability to communicate mentally with his mate. Austin was stuck somewhere between being human and being paranormal.

“What are we going to do?” Austin asked softly.

The words had hardly left his mouth when Denisha and Maia stepped out of a shadow in the living area.

Austin was proud of himself—he only jumped a little.

“You heard that?” Denisha asked.

“Yes. The problem is, I’m unsure who the pissed werewolf is,” Kage answered.

Maia eyed Austin. “Maybe we should portal Austin back—”

“You know he’ll make one of you stay with me,” Austin snapped back. “Meaning there would be only one of you here with him.”

“We could all leave,” Maia pointed out.

“We are not leaving Axel out there all alone!” Austin glared at her.

Maia’s eyes widened. “I didn’t mean it like that! Honestly! I meant when he got here, we could—”

“That’s the thing, though. I don’t think he’s alone.” Bending, Denisha looked out of the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living area.

Austin crossed his arms over his chest. “What do you—”

Another maddened howl echoed across the desert. It was just as menacing as before, but now it sounded closer. Too close. The distant pounding of paws against packed dirt reached Austin a few seconds before snarling wolves raced into the area where the cabins were.

Dust swirled behind them as the wolves fought. What was going on? Why were there wolves in what was basically their camp and why were they fighting? There were shifters in their clan but no wolves—

Was this because of Axel?

Axel wasn’t a clan member, but he was a wolf, and part of Kage’s clan was out there in the middle of nowhere because of Axel. So who else was there because of Axel?

Through the massive window in the living area, Austin could see several wolves fighting too. He uncrossed his arms, slipped his hand into his pocket, and retrieved his phone.

As soon as he unlocked it, light flooded he room. He started to say something to Kage but got distracted when he noticed something about Kage's horns looked off. Were… were they bigger?

There was an anguished howl, and he completely forgot about Kage’s horns as he hit record. He had no idea which one of them was even Axel, but it didn’t matter. Something told him whatever was going on out there shouldn’t be happening.

Still, he worried about Axel. There hadn’t been sufficient enough time for him to gain back the muscle mass and strength he lost due to his captivity.

It also didn’t help that the wolves looked alike—they all had the same color fur. The snarling and threatening growls sent shivers up his back. Austin had never seen wolves fight.

They ripped into each other, blood spraying. Claws flashed. There seemed to be six wolves, and three of them were attacking the other three.

“What the hell?” Austin whispered. “I thought this was neutral territory.”

Growling, Kage slammed open the cabin door and stalked out onto the deck. Denisha and Maia stormed out after him. Austin inched out on the deck, and Denisha immediately planted herself next to him.

“This stops now, or I will drop every last one of you in the ocean!” Kage bellowed, his wings snapping out behind him. “My mate is here, and I consider your actions a threat.”

Some of the wolves were trying to disengage, but the moment they did, the attacks upon them increased.

“Fine!” Kage yelled.

Austin’s mouth dropped as shadows raced across the ground, snagging all six wolves and dragging them into a portal. Pitiful yelps, snarls, and howls followed them into the darkness.

Shit, he got that on video. Austin didn’t know a wolf could scream in panic. The hair the back of his neck stood up as Kage calmly stepped into the portal and disappeared.

“Did he…. Did he just…?” Gobsmacked, Austin stopped recording and looked from Denisha to Maia.

“Yes, he most certainly did,” Denisha said.

“But I’m pretty sure one of those wolves was Axel!” Austin yelled. “There was a really skinny one! I caught a glimpse of it a few times. That had to be Axel. Jeez, one of you do something!”

Denisha nonchalantly leaned against the deck. “Don’t worry, he’ll be back.”

Austin whipped around to stare at Denisha. “Axel or Kage?”

“Yes.”

“Arrrgh, Denisha!”

“It’s okay, Austin. More than likely Kage will return with all six of the wolves,” Maia said. “ Kage dropping them in the ocean is the equivalent of spraying fighting dogs with water. I highly doubt he leaves them there.”

“That is not reassuring,” Austin complained. “Just so you know.”

Austin was working on an argument for trying to track Kage when suddenly six sopping wet people dropped out of the sky and hit the ground.

What an entrance.

Austin discreetly started videoing again. A few seconds later, Kage stepped out of the shadows, his arms crossed over his chest. “The first one of you who shifts will go back, and this time, I’ll leave you there.”

Kage wasn’t kidding, and Austin hoped the wolves understood that. Whatever was going on with these guys had pissed Kage off.

Maia walked down the stairs of the deck and moved toward the only wolf in the whole group Austin recognized—Axel. Next to Axel were two women.

There was a wolf in that other group who looked familiar, but Austin couldn’t place where he’d seen the man. Of course, it didn’t help that every last one of them was as naked as the day they were born. Unlike the daemon, wolves’ clothes didn’t shift with them.

Kage squared off with one of the larger male wolves. “Explain to me, Sergeant at Arms for the Crimson Fangs pack, why you and two of your wolves are here on neutral territory when I know good and damn well you have pack lands.”

Austin swallowed. Now he knew where he had seen that man. It was at the first meeting at Isadora’s restaurant. That was when they’d learned Axel had become the alpha of the Crimson Fangs pack—only it hadn’t been Axel. It had been Nox, the mimic, impersonating Axel.

Jeez, what was the guy’s name? Ditch? No, no that wasn’t right. Dutch! Yeah, that was his biker nickname.

“I don’t answer to you,” Dutch snarled.

“You do if you want to continue standing on dry land,” Kage snapped. “Now explain, otherwise you’re useless to me. Maybe the other two wolves from your pack wish to live and will tell me what I want to know.”

“Are you threatening me?”

“Are you completely stupid? Of course I’m threatening you. Tell me what I want to know or die,” Kage replied calmly. “Is that clear enough for you?”

Tuesday Teaser

Is it me or does Axel seem tense still?

I’m picking up on that too.

I’m not sure why. But one thing I know for certain is that I’m about ready to kick both Denisha and Maia on the ankles. They’re taking the whole silent bodyguard role to ridiculous new heights. I know they have their reservations concerning Axel, but this is fast becoming awkward. Austin glared at both of them when Axel wasn’t looking.

Axel was practically vibrating with tension.

Should I ask him what’s going on? Screw it, I’m going to ask him what’s going on. “Hey, Axel, is everything okay? You’re as taut as a bowstring.”

Axel jerked in surprise then sheepishly looked around. “Yeah, sorry. The full moon is coming up.”

“Ahhhhh. I see.” Kage nodded slowly. “That explains why you seem so…. Yeah. It makes sense now.”

Austin looked from Axel to Kage. “I don’t get it.”

“There is some debate that a full moon can affect sleep patterns, the ability to concentrate, and emotions, which can cause anxiety.” Kage glanced around. “It can also affect animals both on land and in the sea.”

Kage glanced meaningfully at Axel.

“Oh?”

It took a few seconds, but Kage saw when it finally dawned on Austin what Kage was trying not to say since they were still surrounded by humans.

Oh!  Wow, so there is some truth to that myth. How interesting.”

“It will be taken care of,” Kage reassured Austin quietly.

“Gotcha.” Apparently, Kage had picked up on some Austin’s worries through their bond. “How long until the full moon?”

Kage pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and started typing. “Tomorrow night. Damn. I’m sorry, Axel, I didn’t realize. You should have said something. Look, don’t worry. I’ll make arrangements.”

Tuesday Teaser

~excerpt from book #3

The wolf sat up, yawned, then ambled back toward them. He bumped his massive head against Terry’s leg. Laughing, Terry scratched between Alex’s ears.

Kage raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything.

“You seem tired,” Terry said to the wolf. “Let’s not overdo it on your first time. Now that you can shift, you’re welcome to whenever you want. Why don’t you change back, and I’ll fix us something for lunch?”

The wolf head-butted Terry again and wandered into his room. There was a flash of light and low murmured complaints after Axel shifted.

“I’m dressed. You guys can come back in,” Alex said.

Kage followed Terry back into the room. Apparently Terry had been right about overdoing it. Axel looked a little pale. He was sitting on his bed, and the hand he ran through his hair quivered.

After Terry finished checking Axel over once more, he took to the shadows to retrieve the lunch that he’d made. Since Axel seemed a little wobbly, Kage decided to wait until Terry got back.

“Are you okay?”

“That took more out of me than I was expecting.” Axel shook his head. “It’s ridiculous how weak I am.” Axel held his hand up which was still trembling.

“It’s going to take time. You didn’t get in this condition overnight and you’re not going to get out of it overnight.” Kage moved to the small sitting area in Axel’s room. On a table was a glass of water. Picking it up, Kage brought it to Axel.

“Thanks.” Axel took several big gulps. There was an overbed table next to him, and Axel put the glass on it. “I know it’s going to take time. I just hate being weak.”

“I don’t know of anybody who does, but I understand what you’re saying,” Kage said, standing next to the bed. “As soon as you’re able, Austin and I will help you move into your new apartment.”

Axel glanced down and sighed tiredly. “Are you sure you want to do that?”

“It’s already been decided. We’ve talked about this, Axel.” Kage rested his hand on Axel’s shoulder and squeezed gently. “Are you having second thoughts?”

Axel looked up. “I know you offered, but I don’t want to take advantage.”

Removing his hand, Kage sat down next to Axel on the hospital bed. “Believe me, you’re not.”

“I just want to make sure. I do appreciate it, though.”

“It’s not a problem. We both want you to get better.”

“Although the dead gods only know why.”

Before Kage could respond, Terry popped back into the room with his and Axel’s lunch.

“That smells delicious,” Kage said, standing. “I’m going to go so you two can eat. I’ll talk to you later, Axel.”

“I’ll be here,” Axel joked.

“See you later, Doc Terry.”

“Have a good day, Elder.”

Tuesday Teaser - Of Love and Shadows (NSFW)

“Was still a risk.” As punishment, Austin nipped Kage’s ear.

“Fuck!” Kage took a deep breath. “Even if someone did see us, they’d likely think we had used the stair access to the rooftop pool. Humans have this wonderful ability—the ability to talk themselves out of believing what they saw.”

“Still, better to be safe than sorry. We’ll actually take the stair access this time.”

“Of course, mate.” Kage led Austin slide down his body.

Once Austin was standing, he grabbed Kage’s hand and started pulling him toward the pool steps. Once they were out of the water, Austin made a beeline toward the access door, dripping every step of the way while dragging Kage along with him.

“What about your night pants?”

“Leave them. They aren’t going anywhere.” Austin was a man on a mission and didn’t have time to waste.

He typed in the code, the door unlocked, and yanked Kage in after him. The stairwell had two exits: the master bedroom and the kitchen. Austin used the code to open the door to their bedroom and practically jerked Kage inside.

There were times when he wanted to make sweet love with Kage. Then there were times he wanted a good, hard fucking. This time was falling into the latter category.

Stopping in the middle the room, he released Kage’s hand then started peeling Kage out of those wet night pants. The material clung to Kage. Honestly? He didn’t blame it. Kage had a banging body.

Still, they had to go. He finally managed to wrestle them off and strode into the bathroom with them like the conquering hero he was.

Dropping the soggy mass in the bathtub, he grabbed the lube and returned to the bedroom to see Kage sprawled out on the bed stroking his cock. What an image his mate presented, but it wasn’t quite right. Not yet.

“Change,” Austin demanded.

He treasured Kage’s human facade as much as his daemon form, and he made love to both equally, but right now he wanted Kage as he truly was.

The black veins raced across Kage’s skin, bringing his natural color to the forefront. His was black—all daemons were either shades of gray or black. It helped them blend into the shadows.

Some of his kind had wings, like Kage did. Others didn’t. His resembled those of a bat and were large. Some had tails, but Kage didn’t. But they all had one thing in common though—command of the shadows.

Kage grinned, showing off his fangs. Horns grew from his forehead, and his claws sprouted from his fingertips. Sitting forward, his huge wings unfolded, and his body grew. If Kage stood, he’d dwarf Austin now.

Austin swallowed. The creature in his bed was the sexiest thing he’d ever seen. “You take my breath away. Every damn time.”

“Oddly enough, I could say the same about you.” In a move that was too graceful to put into words, Kage went from reclining like an ancient god to prowling across the bed toward Austin like some sort of apex predator.

Those horns. The wings. And fangs. Had he mentioned the fangs? Austin shivered. Oh yeah, fangs, baby.

Apparently sexy and intimidating are my triggers.

Good to know, babe.

Kage slid to his feet and stalked forward. Austin backed up, his heart racing. Yup, sexy and intimidating were definitely his triggers.

Austin’s back hit the wall, and Kage spun him around. His hands flew up, hitting the wall, and he dropped the lube. It made a muffled sound as it fell to the floor.

One of Kage’s hand landed on the back of Austin’s head, pushing it down. Fuck, that was hot, making him hang his head down between his shoulders.

He had the perfect view of his hard cock sticking out from his body. Kage then kicked Austin’s feet farther apart. He could just image how he looked, braced against the wall and spread out.

“You dropped the lube,” Kage muttered, pressing against Austin’s body. “Shame on you.”

“What are you going to do about it?” Austin taunted.

“Daring me, are you? Really, you should know me better by now,” Kage said, throwing Austin’s words back at him.

Tuesday Teaser - Of Love and Shadows, #3 in the Daemons of San DeLain (NSFW)

NSFW~~NSFW~~NSFW

Chapter One – Austin

One week after the Bitterroot Mountain rescue mission

AUSTIN STOOD at the kitchen sink, rinsing dishes then loading them into the dishwasher. They’d just finished breakfast and was having a lazy morning. Both of them were still in their night pants.

“So, I was thinking—”

Kage set his coffee mug down. “Oh dear.”

Without breaking stride, Austin grabbed the sprayer thingy that was part of the kitchen faucet, turned, and aimed it at Kage. “Want to say that again?”

“You wouldn’t—”

“Dare? Really, you should know me better by now.” Grinning, Austin depressed the lever and shot water at Kage, who was sitting at the island.

Yelping, Kage nearly fell off the barstool as he tried to avoid the stream of water. “Hey, now! Babe! Stop!”

Calmly Austin continued to pelt Kage with the sprayer. “You mispronounced ‘I’m sorry’.”

“Austin!” Kage bellowed. He managed to get his feet under him then took off toward Austin.

Austin squirted Kage one last time, then abandoned the sprayer and stated running. Laughing hysterically, he darted around the other end of the island, Kage hot on his heels.

“Crap, crap, crap!” He’d really soaked Kage, and oh dear God, the look on his face when Austin turned the water on him was priceless.

It probably didn’t help that Kage hadn’t been wearing a shirt, so all that cold water had nothing stopping it from hitting skin. Sexy skin he’d drenched with cold water.

“Imp!” Kage yelled.

Austin could practically feel Kage breathing down the back of his neck. An insane giggled escaped him as he hauled ass toward the living area. No way was he going to win this. Kage was too fast, but Austin would go down fighting… well, he’d go down laughing. He was a lover, not a fighter.

Maybe he could put the couch between him and Kage and—Austin shrieked as Kage suddenly stepped out of a shadow in front of him. He plowed into Kage, unable to stop.

Kage simply wrapped his arms around Austin and fell back into the shadows. The absolute absence of light in the portal always threw Austin at first. It was just so dark.

The nothingness swallowed up everything, and there was always a slight rushing sound as they traveled. He’d gotten used to how it felt being in a portal, but it always left him feeling… insignificant.

But he was safe in his mate’s arms, and the uncomfortable feeling was worth being able to travel in such a way.

He plastered himself against Kage’s naked and very wet chest. Even the upper portion of Kage’s night pants were soaked. Snickering, he rested his head against Kage’s cold shoulder. He’d really gotten Kage good.

Kage was so going to make him pay, and he couldn’t wait.

A few seconds later, they stepped out of the shadows. They were in a three-sided building which was actually the access to their rooftop pool. Fortunately for Kage, it was pretty dark in there.

Kage immediately swept up Austin into his arms and headed straight for the water.

“Oh my God, really? I squirted you so you’re going to dump me—” Austin hit the water and sank.

Holy crap, he did it. He really tossed Austin into the pool. Guess it was a good thing Austin didn’t have his phone in the pocket of his night pants.

He glanced up through the water. Kage stood by the edge of the pool, his hands on his hips, grinning down at him.

Jerk.

But by God, that was his jerk. Austin surfaced and shoved his wet hair out of his face.

“How’s the water?” Kage asked.

“Probably a lot less cold than what I sprayed you with,” Austin admitted as he swam over to where Kage stood.

Now, how to get his revenge for that little stunt?

“Help me out?” Austin asked sweetly as he held his hand up to Kage.

“You know, I was not born yesterday. I take your hand and you’re going to pull me into the pool.”

“I would never,” Austin gasped in the fakest voice he could manage. Okay, so yeah, that was totally his plan. Looked like it wasn’t going to work, though. One way or the other, Austin was going to get Kage in the pool.

Plan B it was.

Austin held onto the edge of the pool with one hand while he struggled to get his night pants off with the other. Looking up through his lashes, he tossed his drenched night pants out of the pool next to Kage’s feet.

Kage looked from the soaked material to Austin. He cleared his throat. “Ah….”

Austin pushed away from the edge so Kage had a perfect view of his completely naked body.

“You’re such an imp,” Kage complained before diving into the water, clothes and all.

Austin was still cheering when Kage surfaced. Giggling, Austin started swimming to the shallower area of the pool, Kage right behind him. He had barely touched the bottom with his toes when Kage decided to play octopus. He was still giggling when Kage’s lips landed on his.

Since he didn’t have to worry about them drowning now, Austin wrapped his legs around Kage’s waist, buried his hands in that thick black hair of Kage’s, and kissed his mate for all he was worth.

Kage’s tongue retreated and Austin’s followed, tangling together. Both of Kage’s hands squeezed Austin’s ass as they kissed. Austin finally had to come up for air, but he still wasn’t going to waste this opportunity.

He trailed little nibbling bites down Kage’s throat, tasting a combination of salty skin and chlorine. Tingles raced through his body as his cock started to harden.

He could feel Kage’s dick brushing against his ass. Good grief, had the head escaped Kage’s pants? If he could get Kage out of them, all his mated had to do was lower him down onto his dick. Well, there was a bit more involved than that. Like, for instance, lube.

And God, he wished they had some. This wasn’t a position they’d tried yet, and now that he was in it, he wanted to. He really, really wanted to.

Austin kissed his way back up Kage’s throat and blew softly in his ear. The slight prick of claws on his ass cheeks excited him. Goals. He had them.

“Bed,” Austin whispered into Kage’s ear.

Kage growled, his hands tightening on Austin’s ass. “I’ll just portal us—”

“Yeah, no. No portaling. I can’t believe you did that earlier.”

“The access is enclosed on three sides for that very reason. Plus, the buildings around us aren’t taller than this one. The likelihood of someone seeing us stepping from the shadows was next to none,” Kage said, his hands flexing on Austin’s ass cheeks.

“Was still a risk.” As punishment, Austin nipped Kage’s ear.
