Tuesday Teaser - Behind the Eight Ball

This teaser is from Behind the Eight Ball (Fur, Fangs, and Felines Book 2)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07WFKPTCY

(This is Heller's POV)

Humans didn’t smell like shifters. They didn’t necessarily smell bad, just different. Thankfully the kids out front were almost done with my truck so I could get out of here. Standing at the register, I waited my turn, when suddenly that same scent from earlier came out of nowhere.

It slammed into me, but this time it was stronger. Much stronger. Fresher. It saturated every cell in my body, took me by the throat, and sank its fangs into me. The scent whispered dark, needy things in my ear. My cock sprang up, my balls high and tight to my body.

Mate, mate, mate.

The words echoed in my head. How in the world had I ever thought that scent came from a candle? I was an absolute idiot. I’d waited to find this scent for half my life. I’d finally found it, and I thought the scent came from wax in a bottle? Goddess! I breathed deeply. That scent. I had to find the owner of that scent. Excitement tore through my body. After all this time, I’d found the one for me.

“Sir?”

My gaze snapped up.

“Sir? Are you okay?”

My overjoyed excitement turned to ball-numbing horror. There at the register stood a gum smacking, ponytail wearing, more-makeup-than-you-could-shake-a-stick-at bubbly female. A female.

Not only that, she looked like she might be eighteen on a good day. What was my goddess thinking? I had no fucking clue what to do with a, with a… barely legal vagina. I liked men. I liked dick. Oh, I really liked dick.

“Sir?”

Smack. Smack. Smack.

“I-I-I….” My eyes threatened to cross.

I was sure that gum-smacking sound would haunt me for the rest of my life. I needed help. No, no, what I needed was for the day to start over. Better yet, what I really needed was to have never stepped foot in here in the first place.

A female. What was I going to go with a female?

“Y-You don’t look so good.” She gasped. “Lawson? I need some help here!”

So do I. I cringed at the high-pitched sound that came from the girl’s mouth. Kill me now. Then a sudden thought hit me. Was she human too? Oh no. She couldn’t be human. I sniffed, and there below the scent currently driving me nuts was the scent of a paranormal.

It wasn’t a shifter scent, though. I was sure of that. Was it her? Or was that someone else? No, no, it wasn’t the gum-smacking girl. But there was something in that shop. Thanks to the other smells—especially that ocean scent—I couldn’t tell what type of paranormal was close by.

That scared the piss out of me. My cat paced in my mind, then let loose a growling yowl that left me gasping and twitching. Oh shit, I was on the verge of either fainting or shifting. My gaze wavered and there was a rush of movement around me. I found myself sitting down. That lovely, salty scent of the ocean wrapped around me, and I tried to concentrate on it. Tried to rein myself in.

“Sir? Can you look at me? Come on now.”

The masculine voice snagged my attention and calmness enveloped me. I looked up into the prettiest gunmetal-gray eyes I’d ever seen. My gaze traveled over the person in front of me. Oh, look at all that lovely tanned skin. Nice-shaped nose, five o’clock shadow, firm jaw. Kissable lips. Hair cut short on the sides, but take a look at those curls on top. I just want to run my fingers through them. My gaze dropped. Broad shoulders with a nice shape under those clothes. Like to see him without the clothes.

I returned to those exquisite eyes. As I stared I noticed hints of blue in them, and blue reminded me of the ocean and—and there was that scent. I inhaled. Oh yeah, there it was, and it was coming from the drop-dead sexy man kneeling in front of me, looking so worried.

Reaching out, I cupped the stranger’s jaw. Electricity shot up my arm. “Mine.”

Tuesday Teaser - Behind the Eight Ball is live in KU

Hey y'all. Since Behind the Eight Ball in now in KU, I thought I'd do something for that. :) And don't forget I have an author group too!

Blurb:
A cool morning, a yard full of birds, and a kitty on a mission. What more could a werecat want? Beta Heller Wirth has it all, except a mate—a shifter mate, that is. The last thing he wants is one of those dangerous humans who kill without remorse. Heller knows about that firsthand. So what does the goddess Bast do? She gives Heller exactly what he does not want—a human: business owner Lawson Dupre.

Lawson hasn’t a clue what just happened in his car detail shop. One minute a cute client is about to pass out, then he perks up and starts flirting. Next thing, he runs out the door like the hounds of hell are after him. Learning that Heller is a werecat doesn’t freak out Lawson. He happens to be one of those rare humans who knows paranormals exists. He even lives with one. Watch the fur fly as Heller and Lawson battle hurt feelings, misguided beliefs, and a power shift in Heller’s clowder.

Excerpt:
Step.
Step.
Stop.
The rustling of dead leaves caught my attention, and I froze with one paw still in the air. Not moving and barely daring to breathe, I waited. My whiskers twitched as a cool October breeze disturbed the scent of decaying leaves and rich soil. The foliage trembled again as something rooted around.
I slowly lowered my paw. The disturbance wasn’t very noticeable except to my predatory gaze. The movement continued. Gradually, bit by bit, I crept forward, making sure my long fur didn’t disturb the surrounding mounds of dying leaves. It was times like these I wished my coat were short like Dolf’s. One thing was for sure—whatever was below those leaves was going to be mine shortly. All I needed was to cover a little more distance and I’d be close enough.
Step.
Step.
Crouch.
Heart thumping, I watched as the movement continued. My muscles tightened and my bottom started wiggling. Unable to wait, I sprang forward, claws extended. Leaves flew into the air as I landed on my target. Bugs scattered. Eyes narrowed, I searched for…. There! There was the little bugger. I growled at the big black beetle and trapped it with my paw.
Seconds passed. The bug wiggled under my paw, tickling me. Hunched down, I carefully lifted my paw and peeked. Dammit, can’t see. Unable to get a good look, I lifted my paw a little higher… and there it went, scuttling across the ground. Gleefully I slammed a paw down, trying to trap it. Slap. Slap. Slap. Arrgh! What’s the deal? I keep missing.
Looked like I’d found myself in a game of whack-a-mole, except with a beetle. And off we went. The bug scurried away with me hot on its trail. Every time I thought I had a paw on it, I ended up missing. Stupid critter was fast. I bounded along behind as it raced across the ground. Then it suddenly cut back and ran straight under me.
Surprised, I leaped in the air, all four paws coming off the ground. Whoa! Zigged when I should have zagged. I landed and nonchalantly licked a paw. Hope no one saw that. I had to give the bug credit. That was a smart move. The shrill cry of a mockingbird caught my attention. I lifted my head, searching for the little tattletale.
Up in a tree it sat, its warning cries echoing around the yard. I eyed the tree. Hmm, I could climb it, but the stupid bird will probably just take off. Still, might be fun. Maybe after I finished playing with the bug… and damn. The bug.
My attention returned to where it had been, my tail slashing. Great. Lost it. Stupid bird. I sat up and threw a glare over my shoulder at the bird. Standing, I turned my back to the little menace, tail held high. That’s what I think of you, buddy. I prowled around for a while, sniffing, enjoying the coolness of the morning.
In the early morning sunlight, the dew on the grass sparkled like diamonds. Maybe it was pretty, but the stuff was also cold and wet against my paws. I was glad for my fur. As I wandered back toward the house, my stomach growled. I was hungry and… I sniffed. Oh, was that a blue jay I smelled? Oh, oh, a blue jay. Yum.
The human side of me groaned, but the kitty part wanted to jump with joy. The noisy little shits were actually quite intelligent. Catching one was always a feat. Quick as I could, I hid in the bright fall foliage by the back porch. I stayed very, very still so the stupid bird three feet from me didn’t fly off in a panic.
I licked my lips, my whiskers twitching as I watched the little rascal across from me raise its head. Shit, shit, shit. What caught its attention? Come on already. It’s all fine, nothing to worry about here. No cat hanging around. Just go back to pecking around on the ground. Everything’s good. See? I’m not moving, not even breathing.
Crouched low, I waited while my breakfast relaxed and returned to looking for acorns. Other birds came and went, but I refused to get distracted. I knew the one I wanted. Inch by agonizing inch, I crept closer to my prey. My mouth watered and my heart thumped.
The chatter of the birds around me was easy and relaxed, no distress calls sounding. That’s right. Just keep on eating. Soon I’m going to be eating you. My body tensed, back legs ready to spring me into action….
And the phone in the house rang.

Behind the Eight Ball coming soon as an audiobook!!

OMG, I got word tonight that Behind the Eight Ball is going to be made into an audiobook. *bounce* I got a list of several folks to listen to, and I picked Derrick McClain as the narrator. He has a wonderfully smooth voice and has done several DSP audiobooks.

I was hoping this would qualify for audio, and I can't tell you how pleased I am that it has. I have no idea when the release date will be, but if I remember correctly with Trouble, it's going to be at least six months.

~Paperback/Yankee Candle giveaway for Trouble and Eight Ball~

Hey guys! Who's up for a contest lol?
(open to US residents only, but read on... there will be ebooks offered later!!!)

Contest ends Dec 15th. Stuff will be mailed out on the 16th. Unless something crazy happens. And it's Christmas season to boot lol.

Winner #1 - Paperback copy of Trouble Comes in Threes and Behind the Eight Ball along with a personalized candle Yankee Candle. The candle will have the cover of Trouble on it. (Well, part of the cover. It's a small candle lol.)

Winner #2 - Paperback copy of Trouble Comes in Threes and Behind the Eight Ball. This also will have a personalized candle from Yankee Candle with the cover of Eight Ball on it. (Well, part of the cover. It's a small candle lol.)

The only difference in the prize packs are the covers on the candles. They actually have the same scent, which happens to be my favorite. The scent is called Buttercream. I like it because it isn't very strong and doesn't set off my allergies. My son is asthmatic, and it didn't bother him either- which is actually how we found the candle, lol. He gave it to me as a Mother's Day gift years ago.

How to enter: I'm not going to make it hard. Just leave your name and email address. I'll contact you via email to get your home address so I can send the stuff to you. Just so we're clear, lol -- you *will* have to give me your home address. If you're uncomfortable doing that, don't enter *this contest.

This is only open to people who live in US.

*Now, after this contest is over, I'm going to do another giveaway for the e-books of Trouble and Eight Ball. If you're uncomfortable giving me your home address, or you live out of the states, this is a contest you most definitely want to enter! January is my birth month, so I'll be doing plenty of things. :-)

“You can’t be serious.”
“Why not? It’ll be fun!” I threw the empty Coke can Marshell left on the counter into the trash. “I’m going as a doctor, but I’ll be in scrubs.”
“You’re going as a doctor, Lawson? You? The person who can’t stand the sight of blood?” Marshell smirked as he sipped his drink.
“Shut up. And you’re going as yourself.”
The glass froze halfway to his mouth. “Come again?”
“You’re going as a Vetala.”
Marshell slowly placed his drink back on the counter, then picked up my glass and sniffed it. “How much you had to drink already?”
“Ha-ha. It’s just Coke. Look, you’ve told me you smelled other paranormals there. And it’s a gay bar, so we don’t have to worry about offending some Bible-thumping redneck. Plus, since it’s Halloween night, they’re having a costume contest.”
“Jeez. Costumes? What are you? Seven?”
“It’s a costume contest at a gay bar.” I handed Marshell the advertisement.
“It says there will be ‘costumes, creatures, and candy—eye candy, that is’,” he read. “Okay, it does sound interesting.”
“I promise you, there’s going to be more skin than costumes. The contest winner gets two hundred dollars.”
“Well hell, man. Why didn’t you say so? I’m in.”
“What part persuaded you?”
“The possibilities.” Marshell waggled his eyebrows.
“It’s bad enough Janelle does that. Don’t you start too.” I’d invited Marshell’s twin sister, Janelle, to go tonight, but she had other plans. “You’re such a horn dog.”
“You say that like it’s something new.” Marshell closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
I stayed silent as Marshell concentrated on bringing forth the Vetala side of his nature. I didn’t fear him and his sister, but it always made my heart beat faster when they changed. They were horrifyingly beautiful.
Marshell opened his eyes. The whites of his eyes were a bright sky blue and the pupil, now elliptical, was black. The top two central incisors were long and pointy, and so were his canines. He grinned at me. “Help me pick out what to wear?”
“I swear to God, those are some the scariest fangs I’ve ever seen. And what do you mean help you pick something to wear? What are you? Thirteen?”
“No, not thirteen. But a solid nine—inches, that is.”
“Oh my God, seriously?”
“That’s what he said.” Marshell winked.
“I’m going to need a shovel to dig my way out of all the crap piling up in here.” I punched Marshell in the arm, even though I knew he wouldn’t feel it. “Come on, let’s go look in your closet. Do you still have those black leather pants?”
Marshell followed me down the hallway and into his bedroom. “Yeah, why?”
“I figure the goal for the night is getting you laid and win the prize money. So, let’s go with the black leather pants, a black muscle shirt, and black motorcycle boots. Don’t tie your hair back either.”
Marshall normally kept his long hair tied back in cornrows during the way. “No prob. But I’ll probably ditch the shirt. You know that, right?”
“I figured as much.”
I hunted around Marshall’s closet until I found the black leather pants. Honestly, it didn’t really matter what he wore. Once that shirt came off and the twinks saw Marshell’s broad, muscular chest and smooth, black skin… they’d lose their minds.
I laid the clothes on his bed. “There you go. I’m going to go get dressed now. Think can handle it on your own?”
“I got it, brah.” Marshell whipped off his shirt and flexed his pecs.
“Good grief. Show-off. Give me about forty-five minutes, and I’ll be ready.” I shut the door behind me and hurried to my bedroom.
I shouldn’t have waited until the last minute to talk Marshell into going out with me, but this had literally been a last-minute decision on my part. The only reason I had a costume was because I’d stopped by Walmart on my way home.
Fortunately they had scrubs. Otherwise I’d have been scrounging around in my closet too. Trouble was, Marshell had much cooler clothes than me. He hung out in the bars every weekend. Me? Not so much. I wasn’t into one-night stands. I wanted a relationship, but so far, no one had flipped my switch.
Once we were both dressed, we left in Marshell’s SUV. By the time we got to the bar, it was jumping. It didn’t take long for the crowd to swallow Marshell up, but I was having a good time too. I swayed to the music, the bass pounding as hands caressed my body.
* * * *
Smells surrounded him as he danced, and he breathed deeply. Oh, such lovely scents. Everywhere he turned, he was bathed by the humans’ various desires. Thick in the air was his favorite scent: lust. But the clean aroma of sweaty male called to him too.
He sniffed the air, and his head snapped up. What was that scent? So dark. So dangerous. It wrapped around him, and the smell of his own bitter need rose. It wasn’t a mate scent, but he didn’t care.
A wicked grin crossed his face as he scanned the crowd. He would find the owner of that scent. Oh, there. He saw a tall black man dressed all in black. Vetala, his mind said. Shoving people out of his path, he made his way to where his dark god danced.
Oh yes, this was the one. Mine! With a smile his Vetala pulled him close. Yes! This was where he belonged. As they moved together he caught another smell. His Vetala carried the scent of another male. A human.
His eyes flashed red and he growled, his wolf pressing to get out. The acrid odor of jealousy surrounded him, but was quickly lost in all the other scents. This was not allowable. His dark god should only smell like him.

The threat to his claiming his Vetala would have to die.

Excerpt:
“Hey! Man, slow down.” Marshell hurried out of the building, waving frantically at me. “Jeez, where’s the fire?”
Well, hell. I paused by my truck, waiting for him to catch up. Luckily the streetlight was nearby, so it was well lit behind the building where we parked. “No fire, just ready to go.”
“Uh-huh.” Marshell stopped next to me. “You practically ran out of there.”
“Did not.”
“Oh yeah, you did. What’s up? You’re acting odd.”
Marshell leaned against my car, his arm resting on the roof. His gray polo shirt strained across his massive chest. The man was built like a brick shithouse. Good Lord, his arms were muscular and his skin glistened in the moonlight.
His black hair was in cornrows he’d tied back. They hung down the middle of his back. I could see the concern in his hazel eyes. He really was a gorgeous man, with that strong jaw, goatee, and high forehead. At six three and two forty, there was a lot of man to drool over.
“Lawson? Did you hear me?” Marshell narrowed his eyes at me. “What’s the deal? You’ve been spacey all week.”
Damn. “Yeah, yeah, I heard you. Sorry, just had things on my mind.”
“Uh-huh. These things, do they have anything to do with why you and Janelle were in your office the other day with the door shut?”
Double damn. “Well….”
“Thought so. Come on.” Marshell grabbed my arm and tugged me along behind him.
“What are you…? Would you stop yanking on me, already?”
“Please, that was a tug, not a yank. As much hand action you’ve had going on lately, I’d think you’d know the difference.”
I finally knew what folks meant when they said they sputtered. “Oh my God, you did not just go there.”
Marshell glanced back at me and tapped his head. “Yeah, I did. Good hearing, remember? You might be at the other end of the house, but I can still hear you slapping the monkey.”
I swear the blush started at my toes and the heat of it barreled upward toward my face. Jesus, could I get any redder? “Just kill me now.”
“Nope, not before dinner.”
I eyed his hair, wondering how he’d feel if I grabbed a handful and yanked. Hard.
“Whatever you’re plotting, just stop,” he threw over his shoulder. “I’m buying you dinner, so no contemplating my demise.”
“You do know this is Friday night, right? We’ll be lucky to get in anywhere.”
Marshell snorted. “It’s not too late yet. We’ll get in. Trying to distract me isn’t going to work either. You’re telling me what’s up.”
“Look, it’s nothing. Really.”
Finally we stopped by his SUV, and he turned to me. “Right. You’re distracted and Janelle’s been smirking behind your back all week. Don’t tell me nothing’s up. You can tell me or—”
“I’d sooner run naked down Main Street—”
“As entertaining as that would be, you still haven’t answered my question. Running out of time here, bro.” He crossed those massive arms over his chest. “Do you me want to ask her? You know I will.”
Closing my eyes, I massaged my temples. Great, the first stirrings of a headache were brewing. Why was I dragging this out? I told them everything and had for years. They were my family. Actually they were the only family I had. My parents turned their backs on me ten years ago. Being gay left our relationship strained, but dating a black man apparently pushed them right over the edge. They were no great loss, as far as I was concerned.
“Lawson?”
I looked at him, seeing the concern in his eyes. I knew he’d do what he threatened and ask Janelle. I didn’t want to think about how much fun she’d have telling him. “Fine. Janelle seems to think I met my mate last Friday.”
Marshell blinked at me. He opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again. His eyes bulged.
I glared at him. “That’s a fine imitation of a guppy you got going there.”
Marshell snapped his mouth closed. His glare was much more impressive than mine. “I can’t believe you compared me to some teeny tiny fish. A guppy. A flipping guppy. And what the fuck, man? Why are you standing here? Why aren’t you flat on your back with your—”
I leaned up against the SUV, watching the show. Look at the outrage. “You know I prefer to top.”

Behind the Eight Ball cover - Life is Better with a Cat

Whoot! Here we go! Paul Richmond did the cover for Heller and Lawson's story. Yes, the cat is supposed to look somewhat... exasperate, lol. This is Heller, after all. The male *could* be called a diva. He really does mean well, he just... doesn't always thinks. Or should I say stop to think. He's not mean, he really isn't. And as y'all find out, he has reason for how he acts. But he makes no excuses... this is how he is. He's lost, ya know? He just needs to be found.

Meet Lawson, lol. Now watch the fur fly! ;)

This is Heller in a tree at night.

Heller's truck. He loves this truck!

Heller's bedroom. I tried my best to describe it in the book.

Heller.

Heller in his cat form.

Heller's living area.

The release date for Behind the Eight Ball is Oct 30th. It should be on the Coming Soon pg at Dreamspinner very soon. I'll have a buy link then. :) Keep an eye out for the upcoming tour and a couple of posts at the end of October on the DsP blog about our boys :)

Dreamspinner Spins Me a Dream!

Yup, finally got word back on Behind the Eight Ball! Heller's book will be out Oct/Nov of this year. This is book #2 in the Fur, Fangs, and Felines series.

I can't tell y'all how relieved I am, lol. I was beginning to get a bit worried since it was taking so long. Good thing is I'm about 15K into book three, which is Remi's book. I'm calling it It Takes Two to Tango. This time the mate isn't a human. Oh no, Remi's mate is anything but a human. *wink* More to come on that later, though. :)

Here are the main characters from Behind the Eight Ball:

Heller

His werecat form:

Update on Behind the Eight Ball

So, I turned in Behind the Eight Ball to Dreamspinner on the 23rd. Yay! I haven't heard anything yet, but hopefully I will soon. :)

The story ended up at 71K. That's a little less than Trouble Comes in Threes. The series is called the Fur, Fang, and Felines series. LOL. Tal, Kirk, and Dolf are in this, of course, but it's Heller's story.

Synopsis:
A cool autumn morning, a yard full of birds, and a kitty on a mission. What more could a shifter want? Beta Heller Wirth has it all… except a mate: a shifter mate, that is. He’s been looking, but so far it’s a no-go in the fate department. And after seeing how happy Dolf is with Tal and Kirk, Heller really wants to meet that special someone... as long as he's a shifter.

Frankly Heller can’t think of anything worse than having a human mate. Many in his clowder agree. While Kirk may be okay, Heller knows humans are dangerous. They kill without remorse. They destroy whatever they touch. They just can’t be trusted. Period. He ought to knowhis sister died at the hands of a human lover, and Heller can’t forgive humanity for that.

So of course the goddess Bast gives him a human mate. While getting his truck detailed, fate strikes. Heller catches a whiff of his mate. Oh, he's a happy kitty... until he figures out that scent's from a human. He reacts badly and runs—and by doing so, rejects his mate.

Lawson Dupre isn’t exactly sure what just happened in his car detail shop. One minute there was a guy about to pass out, then he seemed okay and was even flirting, and then he runs out the door like the hounds of Hell were after him. Lawson’s best friend and one of the co-owners of the shop, Janelle Foles, quickly explains who she suspects the stranger is to Lawson.

Welcome to the wonderful world of shifters lol.

Which Lawson knows all aboutbecause Janelle’s also not human. Lawson is one of those rare humans who know paranormals exist. Janelle and her brother, Marshell, are Vetalassnake-like paranormals. So finding out his mate is a werecat isn’t freaking Lawson out. The fact that his mate seems to hate humans is. If that’s not enough to deal with, there’s a werewolf stalking Lawson.

Watch the fur fly as Heller and Lawson struggle to overcome deeply misguided beliefs and hurt feelings. As Heller and Lawson work out their problems, tension builds around them.
